A PROMINENT PSYCHOLOGIST OFFERS HIS THOUGHTS
By Steven H Propp
Carl Rogers (1902-1987) was an influential American psychologist and (along with Abraham Maslow) among the founders of humanistic psychology.

He states in the Foreword to this 1970 book, "I have written papers and given talks on various facets of the burgeoning movement toward encounter groups... So I decided to assemble together for publication both the talks and papers I have given, together with new material written for this book, in the hope that they will stimulate a thoughtful analysis and a clarification of differences regarding this incredibly expanding trend. As with all my more recent books, this is definitely a personal document. It does not pretend to be a scholarly survey of the field, nor a profound psychological or sociological analysis of encounter groups... This book is written out of living personal experience, and those whose lives are described and whose statements are quoted are living, struggling people. I hope it will convey MY perception of one of the exciting developments of our time: the intensive group experience. And I hope it will help familiarize you with what an encounter group IS, and what it can MEAN."

Here are some quotations from the book:

"What accounts for the quick spread of groups? ... (W)e are sufficiently affluent to pay attention to our psychological wants. As long as I am concerned over next month's rent, I am not very sharply aware of my loneliness. This is borne out, in my experience, by the fact that interest in encounter groups and the like is not nearly so keen in ghetto areas as in sections of the population which are no longer so concerned about the physical necessities of life." (Pg. 11)
"The most obvious deficiency of the intensive group experience is that frequently the behavior changes that occur, if any, are not lasting." (Pg. 40)
"There is a great deal of debate as to whether the intensive group experience produces any significant change, and especially whether it produces any LASTING change, in behavior." (Pg. 75)
"To put it very briefly, a person is most lonely when he has dropped something of his outer shell or facade---the face with which he has been meeting the world---and feels sure that no one can understand, accept, or care for the part of his inner self that lies revealed." (Pg. 117)

Graduate students and researchers alike will benefit from this treatment of classical and modern topics in homotopy theory of topological spaces with an emphasis on cubical diagrams. The book contains 300 examples and provides detailed explanations of many fundamental results. Part I focuses on foundational material on homotopy theory, viewed through the lens of cubical diagrams: fibrations and cofibrations, homotopy pullbacks and pushouts, and the Blakers-Massey Theorem. Part II includes a brief example-driven introduction to categories, limits and colimits, an accessible account of homotopy limits and colimits of diagrams of spaces, and a treatment of cosimplicial spaces. The book finishes with applications to some exciting new topics that use cubical diagrams: an overview of two versions of calculus of functors and an account of recent developments in the study of the topology of spaces of knots.

Rome: Day One, by Andrea Carandini

Andrea Carandini's archaeological discoveries and controversial theories about ancient Rome have made international headlines over the past few decades. In this book, he presents his most important findings and ideas, including the argument that there really was a Romulus--a first king of Rome--who founded the city in the mid-eighth century BC, making it the world's first city-state, as well as its most influential. Rome: Day One makes a powerful and provocative case that Rome was established in a one-day ceremony, and that Rome's first day was also Western civilization's.

Historians tell us that there is no more reason to believe that Rome was actually established by Romulus than there is to believe that he was suckled by a she-wolf. But Carandini, drawing on his own excavations as well as historical and literary sources, argues that the core of Rome's founding myth is not purely mythical. In this illustrated account, he makes the case that a king whose name might have been Romulus founded Rome one April 21st in the mid-eighth century BC, most likely in a ceremony in which a white bull and cow pulled a plow to trace the position of a wall marking the blessed soil of the new city. This ceremony establishing the Palatine Wall, which Carandini discovered, inaugurated the political life of a city that, through its later empire, would influence much of the world.

Uncovering the birth of a city that gave birth to a world, Rome: Day One reveals as never before a truly epochal event.

Review
"Tradition assigns [the founding of Rome] to the year 753 B.C., when Romulus--who, according to legend, was rescued from infanticide with his twin brother Remus and suckled by a she-wolf--erected the first walls of the so-called Roma Quadrata, or 'square Rome.' It has been a very long time since anyone took this account as an accurate historical description, but Carandini provocatively suggests that it might be more or less true."--Adam Kirsch, New Yorker

"It has been assumed generally that the traditional founding of Rome by twin brothers Romulus and Remus 28 centuries ago should be classified as myth. This provocative examination by a highly regarded but controversial archaeologist suggests, however, that the story contains more than a grain of truth . . . he marshals considerable evidence, written and archaeological, to bolster his claims, and his conclusions certainly are startling and exciting."--Jay Freeman, Booklist

"Carandini's gifts as an archaeologist are admired even by those who don't accept his interpretations and Rome: Day One is full of fascinating detail."--The Age

"'It's a bold book, but will not persuade all readers,' said ancient Rome Professor Christopher Smith of the British School at Rome. '[Still] no one in recent years has done more than Carandini to challenge our perceptions.'"--New York Post

"Researchers will be intrigued with Carandini's precise picture of early Rome and the fine illustrations."--Choice

"What makes Rome: Day One such an extraordinary book is not the erudite descriptions but the energetic style of prose. For a volume so packed with detail, it remains an astonishingly easy read. . . . This is a book written to bring those early days to the attention of anyone and everyone."--Caldrail, UNRV History

"[T]he book is interesting because it discusses a topic that is much eschewed by the modern historians as it treads on controversial religious aspects."--Vaidehi Nathan, Organiser

"Uncovering the birth of a city that gave birth to a world, Rome reveals as never before a truly epochal event."--World Book Industry

From the Inside Flap

"Dateline Rome, April 21, 753 BC. Andrea Carandini, archaeologist extraordinary, burrows down through thirteen meters of fill to hit pay dirt--Day 1 of Urbs Roma. What could be more exciting! History and archaeology rub shoulders with Freudian psychology as Carandini, a native of Rome, takes us on an enthralling guided tour through the material and written sources for the primal moment of the City that would create a World, our world. Urbi et Orbi, indeed."--Paul Cartledge, University of Cambridge

"A fascinating examination of how Rome began some twenty-eight centuries ago, written by an archaeologist whose many years of excavation have profoundly altered our understanding of the city and its history. Challenging, and often controversial, this book is a rewarding read both for the long-standing enthusiast and the newcomer to the subject, helping us to understand the development of the Roman state which went on to dominate so much of the known world."--Adrian Goldsworthy, author of Caesar: The Life of a Colossus

"Andrea Carandini's archaeological work in key areas of Rome will be fundamental to our understanding of the formative period of the city, and is part of the developing fascination with the beginnings of Rome. This translation brings the evidence, and Carandini's challenging interpretation, to a new audience."--Christopher Smith, director of the British School in Rome

Caveat Lector!
By Remus
Caveat Lector! Carandini spins quite a tall tale in this book...but that's all it is—a work of fiction. Readers with a serious interest in early Rome are advised to read T.P Wiseman's review of this book in The Classical Journal ("Carandini's handsome little book offers no more than an enjoyable fantasy,") and Wiseman's longer expose of Carandini's other (Italian-language) books, "Reading Carandini," in The Journal of Roman Studies, which more closely examines Carandini's methodology (such as it is) and his personal motivations for advancing his idiosyncratic notions. Readers interested in rigorous history (as opposed to sheer fantasy) will find more substance in Cornell's The Beginnings of Rome and Wiseman's Remus: A Roman Myth.

A different sort of Roman scholarship
By Mario de Vivo
I gave "Rome, Day One" three stars with a heavy heart, because the book IS interesting. Having read anglo historians on ancient Rome, I have found it refreshing to be able to read an Italian archeological perspective and, besides, the often too dismissive historian view of Roman ancient tradition is unconvincing. Andrea Carandini believes that there is a structured core of truth about the Remus and Romulus story of the foundation of Rome, and he describes, with more detail than anybody else I've read, how the foundation could have happened. The illustrations are black, white and gray toned, but they are a banquet for the hungry eyes of everybody curious about how Rome really was like in the beginning. If other professional historians understood the power of illustration as Carandini does, their books would be so much better appreciated than they are!

The book has two aims: first, as stated above, to mix tradition and archeology in order to recreate the foundation of Rome, and the second is to present Rome, together with Greece, as distinct in terms of political organization from the ancient eastern states and empires, the democratic versus totalitarian roots of, respectively, the "West"and the "East" (indeed, Carandini extends this distinction to our own days in his "Conclusion", in a oversimplified manner).

The first objective is met finely, albeit with the same dismissiveness towards alternative views that historians show to the traditional account. I would like to know who thinks differently and why, and thus I probably would appreciate more Carandini's views. Instead, throughout the book, Carandini frequently reminds us that he has been excavating in the area for twenty years. Although this is not the only argument supporting his views, it feels like the number of years is very important in the matter, at least to him. It is and it is not, because one could have excavated for 40 years and end up finding little, while one luck digging season... Anyway, my point is that I would like to see more explaining and less bragging.

Another thing that bothered me is that he rarely mentions anybody else's archeological efforts, and he writes as if everything of importance have been found by him and his team. Maybe it is so, but maybe it isn't.

Finally, the author would have much helped his argument if he further clarified the comparison between early Roman foundation traditions and those that appeared after the Greek introduction of Troy, Aeneas, and other such characters in the story. He should have done it because the book is not for the specialist. This is very important because it would have supported his choice of sources for the traditional account.

Bottom line: if you like to read about the history of Rome, particularly early Rome, you must read this book, because it is so fascinating. Only be prepared for a different sort of scholarship than that of British and American historians.

Hard work if you're not an archaeologist or historian
By C. Watson
I'm star rating this item three because I suspect it is, in fact, an excellent piece of work for its intended audience of scholars, historians and archaelogists. It's not really fair for myself - a layman just interested in the history of Rome - to grade it according to my own lack of understanding, bust Amazon requires I add a rating, so three it is...

What I will say is this, the book is somewhat mis-marketed. Everything about its layout, cover art, blurb and design suggests that the reader is in for an engaging, argumentative, perhaps journalistic style laymans book. What it actually is, however, is a rather dense archaelogical thesis that I found somewhat slow-going and very difficult to comprehend. There's no narrative here, only a lot of challenging and dry scholarly description.

Here is a brief example:

"The King Augur and in(du)perator (Ennius), who had auxiliaries and a mounted guard, was potentissimus both with the priestly order - composed of the flamines of the divine triad and the five pontifices, in addition to the vestal virgins - and with respect to the Quirites gathering in the Comitia Calata and curiata where the king stated his ius, and from which bodies his army was formed."

If you had a hard time with that sentence then you'll have a hard time with the rest of the book.

As I stated I'm only entering this review as a warning for the lay readers who may be seeking something more narrative based and engaging. From a scholars perspective, though, it seems very good - lots of fascinating maps and diagrams of the dig sites and the corresponding foundation texts are well-sourced from primary sources such as Livy, Ovid and Plutarch. Actually the last thirty or so pages of the book is the appendix of the original texts from these sources and, in my opinion, made for a more engaging read than the book itself.

Cracking India: A Novel, by Bapsi Sidhwa

The 1947 Partition of India is the backdrop for this powerful novel, narrated by a precocious child who describes the brutal transition with chilling veracity. Young Lenny Sethi is kept out of school because she suffers from polio. She spends her days with Ayah, her beautiful nanny, visiting with the large group of admirers that Ayah draws. It is in the company of these working class characters that Lenny learns about religious differences, religious intolerance, and the blossoming genocidal strife on the eve of Partition. As she matures, Lenny begins to identify the differences between the Hindus, Moslems, and Sikhs engaging in political arguments all around her. Lenny enjoys a happy, privileged life in Lahore, but the kidnapping of her beloved Ayah signals a dramatic change. Soon Lenny’s world erupts in religious, ethnic, and racial violence. By turns hilarious and heartbreaking, the domestic drama serves as a microcosm for a profound political upheaval.

From Publishers Weekly
The narrator of Sidwha's ( The Bride ) timely novel about the violent 1947 partition of India is the extremely observant Lenny Sethi, whose family belongs to the Parsee community in Lahore. As a child, a polio victim and a member of a minority, she is the perfect witness (though somewhat precocious) to the historic upheaval. Sidwha tempers Lenny's hyper-awareness, however, by capturing the whole range of her fears and joys as her innocence becomes another casualty of the violence among Moslems, Sikhs and Hindus. At one point Lenny declares: "Lying doesn't become me. I can't get away with the littlest thing." Persuasive, this statement reinforces earlier comments she lets slip about herself which display this artless candor: "the manipulative power of my limp"; "I place a hypocritical arm protectively round her shoulders." Lenny's honesty is compelling, and the reader, like many in the story, cannot help but trust her. She is alternately thrilled and frightened by the events she dutifully records, and so, in the end, is the reader.

From Library Journal
Presented in the first person by a sparsely educated Parsee girl in Lahore named Lenny, who grows from four to eight as she narrates, this novel is incongruously overloaded with erudite diction. Thus, unlike Huck Finn's tale, this child's story becomes unbelievable. Despite the title, it focuses on the everyday lives of Lenny, her family, and their associates, often interesting but frequently trivial. Throughout the book, Lenny includes verbatim transcriptions of extended conversations/situations about racial relations, sex, politics, religion, and selected aspects of the 1947 Partition. Sadly, the promise of the novel (semi-autobiographical?) is inadequately fulfilled and seems to falter from its conception. (Needed: a glossary of Indian words.)-- Glenn O. From Kirkus Reviews
Pakistani Sidhwa's third novel (The Bride, 1983; The Crown Eaters, 1982)--written from the point of view of a young girl who's surrounded by the personal and political violence that accompanied the partitioning of India in 1947--manages to do justice to the complexity of racial, ethnic, and religious violence in the era and to evoke the passage from an affluent childhood to the ambiguities of experience. ``India is going to be broken....And what happens if they break it where our house is?'' asks narrator Lenny, the daughter (who turns eight in 1947) of an affluent Parsi family in Lahore. And in fact her household does break apart when her young nanny, or Ayah, is kidnapped. Before that event takes center stage, the novel glorifies in the ``beautifully endowed'' world, which, as evoked by Sidhwa's luminous present-tense prose, is laminated with the magic of childish wonder: moving between her own house and that of her dynamic Godmother (``It is her nature to know things''), who lives ``with her docile old husband and slavesister,'' Lenny dramatizes the textures of multicultural Indian life, with its summer trips to the Himalayan foothills, dinner parties, visits from the ice-candy man, and, increasingly, hints of ``Hindu-Muslim trouble.'' While Lenny ``learns to tell tales'' by ``offering lengthier and lengthier chatter'' to fill dinner-time silences, she also becomes ``aware of religious differences.'' Sikhs start keeping to themselves, whereas before ``everybody is themselves.'' Violence escalates, India is divided, fires appear ``all over Lahore,'' and Ayah is kidnapped. She's finally found in the red-light district, then rescued through Godmother's influence, but it's clear that- -along with India and Lenny--she will never be the same. Richly layered, both realistic and magically evocative as well as topical: a novel that brings to triumphant life an India that ``has less to do with fate than with the will of men.'' -- Copyright ©1991, Kirkus Associates, LP. The Partitiion of India
By Joyce Merletti
The story is told through the eyes of Lenny, a young Indian girl whose beautiful Hindu nanny has included her in her friendship with a number of young men of various religions and walks of life. Despite the differences, they are united by their love for her. As their beloved nation drifts toward a complete rupture, violence begins in the streets; the child sees some of the young men changing religions to protect their families, or leaving the city for a safer place. She begins to understand the religious divisions that are ripping the fabric of India. She witnesses scenes of slaughter; her nanny is betrayed and kidnapped, bringing her to a shameful life.
No childhood can continue amid this terror, and the reader feels such sympathy for little, crippled Lenny and her young friends. But heart-wrenching as the story is, it is only one story of that time, and Sidhwa tells it very well. She sheds light on this dark period, but in doing so, makes the reader want to know more about that time, and what led to it.

Loss of innocence and national chaos
By Luan Gaines
Wrenched from the security of the familiar, a young girl gleans intimate knowledge of the nature of betrayal. As a cosseted child, Lenny's short life is defined by the affection of family, friends and her beloved Ayah. As most children who have the blessing of regularity in their lives and know the indulgence of boredom, Lenny is on an intimate terms with mundane household affairs and neighborhood gossip, her extended family ever available for entertainment and amusing peccadilloes. The family's simple life changes forever with the Partition of India in 1947 and the creation of Pakistan for Muslims, Hindus and Sikhs remaining in the state of India. As citizens of the newly formed Pakistan, this family's everyday reality begins to shift with the changing times, threatening to destroy a child's security and trust forever.
In Lahore, a city that has welcomed differences and encouraged variety, Muslims, Sikhs and Hindus have mixed without incident. After the Partition, the dangers of alliance permanently stamp the mark of change and entire families begin to disappear overnight. In agonizing stages, Sidwha relates this tragic account through Lenny's eyes. And it is that vision, with glimpses of violence flashing around the periphery, that ultimately alerts Lenny to the shape of the future. The juxtaposition of family life and national chaos outlines an insider's interpretation of daily routine and a whole country spinning out of control. Peopled with eccentric characters and quirky personalities, one of the most romantic and beloved is Lenny's beautiful and desirable Ayah. Ultimately, the abrupt disappearance of that Ayah, who has been kidnapped by nefarious characters, is central to the theme of this carefully wrought tale. All sense of harmony and continuity is abruptly shattered by the miasma of violence that seeps under closed doors at night like a poisonous invisible fog. This book is a stunning reminder of the nature of impermanence, "collateral damage" in the form of a loving Ayah, whose lovely spirit is virtually destroyed along with Lenny's innocence.

The animal inside us all
By A Customer
I was shocked to read a couple of previous reviews claiming "Cracking India" portrays certain groups as monstrous while favoring others. Whoever has made these statements has obviously skipped over huge chunks of Bapsi Sidhwa's book, for Sidhwa goes out of her way to present a balanced point of view of Partition. This book is about the animal inside all people -- the demon that can emerge in the name of religion within everyone, whether Muslim, Hindu, Sikh, or whatever. This book is not about an "us" and the "other" -- or conversely, it deals very much with the "us" and the "other," and in doing so, is not. While i could very easily disprove the claims of bias made by a couple of previous reviews, by quoting several powerful incidents from the book i would only be doing future readers a disfavor -- i do not want to rob anyone of exactly the elements of universal horror and suspense that make the book the masterpiece it is. I recommend this book highly to anyone -- i know it left me tear-streaked and stunned.

About the Author

Ed Maciorowski is the co-founder and co-owner of BrickPicker.com. He has been a LEGO collector since 1973, when his parents gave him his first set (710 Wrecker with Car). Ed is now an investor as well, with over 6,000 sets in his collection and a current market value well into the six figures. He and his brother, Jeff, got the idea to create the online LEGO price and investing guide after Ed discovered that a 10179 Millennium Falcon set he bought for $399 was selling for $800-$1,200 on eBay two years later. The price for that set is now nearly $4,000. Ed also is a regular contributor in the LEGO-themed magazine, BLOCKS.

Jeff Maciorowski is the co-founder and co-owner of BrickPicker.com. He is a senior website engineer for a $40 million market research company and specializes in multiple web technologies, including Cold Fusion, jQuery, Oracle, and mySQL. Jeff built Brickpicker.com from the ground up and it is now the third busiest LEGO-themed website in the world that attracts over five million visitors annually. The site has been featured in the USA Today and other digital media outlets (BBC.com, Wired.com). Jeff is also the creator of the recently launched BrickClassifeds.com website, a cost-effective secondary LEGO marketplace.

Wonderful book that offers a different perspective at the world of Lego
By Tony
If you are looking for a book dedicated to specific topics such as minifigures or specific themes, this might not be for you. DK has been publishing those books since 2010. Instead, Jeff and Ed Maciorowski take readers in a wonderful journey exploring iconic Lego sets with summaries, facts, excellent pictures, price values and opinions on popularity of each set. The book also clearly states that like other forms of investing, profits are not guaranteed. Not every Lego set appreciates in value.

This book can easily be compared to a stock market investing guide that lists summaries and details on stock value for each S&P 500 company. However, not many investment guides contain such beautiful photography and is well designed. Honestly this book is designed for the coffee table. A hardcover edition would be welcomed.

While a Kindle edition is available, it is not identical to the paperback. Some page details are missing in the Kindle edition that would have me recommend the paperback version instead.

Excellent Guide for LEGO Set Collectors/Resellers; Entertaining for LEGO Fans, Too
By Lynne E.
If you're a collector or fan of LEGO sets, you'll probably like THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO COLLECTIBLE LEGO SETS; IDENTIFICATION AND PRICE GUIDE. Its only real drawback is that the prices are already out of date, as of the date of publication, and are kind of low (in varying degrees). The book generally limits itself to LEGO sets that were created and released from 2000 and after, but includes a handful of pre-2000 sets (e.g., 8480 Space Shuttle; 6086 Black Knight's Castle).

The prices are drawn from eBay auction sales listings--which is an acceptable benchmark source, as far as I'm concerned. However, once a LEGO set is retired (as are most of the sets in this book), the price goes up and up with market demand. Thus no "price guide" can ever keep up, as long as older LEGO sets continue to be popular and desirable. Still, the Price Guide at the end of the book is fascinating, as it analyzes the sets with their calculated ROI% (return on investment percentage from the retail price). The appreciation on the rarest sets can be more than 1000% over the original retail price!

The identification portion does NOT go out of date, and is valuable for collectors, sellers, and ordinary fans like myself. The listing for each set states: (1) set number and name; (2) year released; (3) no. of pieces; (4) minifigures; (5) original retail price; (6) current price for a new set; and (7) current price for a used set. There is an illustration showing what the set looks like, and a short text discussing interesting facts about the set (especially facts that may affect its future value as a collectible, such as early retirement that usually affects the rarity). This is the only book I've found that includes the original retail prices for retired sets.

The Introduction includes a checklist of things that a novice should look for in selecting LEGO sets for investments. These are (1) rare pieces and minifigures; (2) licensed sets; (3) large sets with 1,000 pieces or more; (4) sets with low price per piece ratios; (5) sets with short production runs; (6) limited edition sets; (7) small sets and polybags, especially seasonal sets; and (8) unique sets. Each of the above checklist items is explained in more detail. There is also a lot of good advice about the drawbacks of purchasing LEGO sets for later resale as collectibles (e.g., the boxes require huge amounts of space).

The entries for the sets are organized by the LEGO themes: Ch. 1 Advanced Models; Ch. 2 Architecture; Ch. 3 Batman; Ch. 4 Bionicle; Ch. 5 Castle; Ch. 6 City; Ch. 7 Creator; Ch. 8 Dino; Ch. 9 Friends; Ch. 10 Harry Potter; Ch. 11 Hero Factory; Ch. 12 Ideas/CUUSOO; Ch. 13 Indiana Jones; Ch. 14 Legends of Chima; Ch. 15 The LEGO Movie; Ch. 16 Lord of the Rings/The Hobbit; Ch. 17 Monster Fighters; Ch. 18 Ninjago; Ch. 19 Pirates/Pirates of the Caribbean; Ch. 20 Seasonal; Ch. 21 Space; Ch. 22 Star Wars UCS; Ch. 23 Star Wars Non-UCS; Ch. 24 Superheroes; Ch. 25 Technic; Ch. 26 Trains; Ch. 27 Vintage Pre-2000; Ch. 28 Miscellaneous. The book also contains a Price Guide, Glossary, Bibliography, and Author Biographical Information.

This book displays perfectly in the Kindle edition on my iPad. This is a reference book for collectors that is also entertaining for fans like myself. If you're less interested in prices and more interested in looking at the details of the sets themselves, you might want to consider Great LEGO Sets: A Visual History.

Not just plastic bricks you step on in the middle of the night
By My children's dad
Great read and very informative. This book highlighted several of the more incredible LEGO sets that were available to general public as they made excellent display pieces. These were sets that commanded above average price when available at stores, higher still when they were discontinued. A few notable examples were the Grand Carousel and Statue of Liberty.
