An introduction into the problems of Christian philosophy. It focuses on the philosophical system of Dr. Cornelius Van Til, which in turn is founded upon the presuppositions of an infallible revelation in the Bible and the necessity of Christian theology for all philosophy.

Basic to this study is the belief that presuppositions of human thought in every field must be basically one in order to arrive at any concept which both validates biblical faith and human knowledge. The sovereignty of the self-contained God is the key to every field, in that only the God of Scripture makes all things possible and explicable and is thus the basic premise not only of theology, but of philosophy, science and indeed all knowledge. In that God is the Creator of all things. He is their only valid principle of interpretation, in that they derive both their existence and meaning from His creative act. This belief is herein set forth in terms of various aspects of human thought.

Again basic to this study is the belief that such a philosophy finds consistent and able exposition in the writings of Cornelius Van Til. This work, therefore, is thus both an exposition as well of Van Til's development of that philosophy, a school of thought to which the author subscribes.

This is Rushdoony's foundational work on philosophy.

RUSHDOONY'S INFLUENTIAL EXPOSITION OF VAN TIL

Rousas John Rushdoony (1916-2001) was a Calvinist philosopher, historian, and theologian and is widely credited as the father of Christian Reconstructionism. This 1958 book is subtitled, "An analysis of the philosophy of Cornelius Van Til"; Van Til was a famous professor of "presuppositional" apologetics at Westminster Theological Seminary.

He asserts, "Man neither is nor can be 'objective' and 'impartial.' All his thinking is from some fundamental starting point or presupposition which is a priori and is therefore either pure or impure faith." (Pg. 13) Later, he adds, "The difficulty most people experience is not with Van Til's writing but with his God; it is essentially He whom they find unacceptable and offensive. Their quarrel is not with what they cannot understand in Van Til but with that which they all too clearly understand." (Pg. 98)

He argues, "The orthodox view of the authority of Scripture is often rejected as involving circular reasoning; it is charged that it is merely reasoning from God to God, and from the Bible to the Bible. There is no reason in denying this charge. Rather, it must be affirmed that in a very real sense all reasoning is circular reasoning. Men move from their basic presuppositions to brute factuality, 'facts,' whose meaning is predetermined by their philosophic presuppositions and the subjectivity of their resasoning, back again to their own interpretation." (Pg. 139-140) He reiterates, "Scripture speaks to man with authority... All this the Christian must boldly affirm, without any hesitancy with regard to the charge of circular reasoning." (Pg. 145-146)

This book had great influence on persons such as Greg Bahnsen and Gary North, and will be of ongoing interest to students of presuppositional apologetics, or Christian Reconstruction.

Rushdoony on Van Til

This is a must read for anyone who would seek to know God on God's terms. Men water down Christianity, with a tendency to deify themselves. Rushdoony's explanation of Cornelius Van Til restores the Biblical view of God and man. The writing demands something of the reader, but it is a difficult subject. Here it is made intelligible, if not overly simple.

Rushdoony was one of the most profound christian thinkers in the twentieth century. His introduction to Cornelius Van Til is well worth reading. I would also recommend reading "Always Ready" by Greg Bahnsen, as well as Van Til's "A survey of Christian Epistemology", his "An Introduction to Systematic Theology" and "A Defense of the Faith". In these writings the pretended autonomy of anti-theistic thought is exposed for what it is (thoroughly bankrupt).

'Making Sense' Of We Are Up Against

This volume of collected edited works looks deeply in the psyche and motivation of suicide bombers. It is loaded with many surprises, because of its plethora of information and insights about, not only, those on present day suicide missions, but others who have made the pages of history as well.
One featured study reveals that suicide bombers (SB) were far from uneducated, poverty-stricken castaways of the lower class, but rather middle class "normal" members of society, very well-behaved and deeply religious. Although, we assume that SBs are seriously, psychologically, disturbed people, we discover that these are the very types of individuals rejected for suicide missions. Why? They might screw things up or get caught, expose the organization and invite retaliation. When you think about the coolness of the 911 attackers, this makes sense and is very, very frightening. SB's are not motivated by the desire for death, but life; for they seek to live in Paradise.
SBs far reaching motives are also explained: the instantaneous absolution of sins for themselves and possibly their families, 72 houris (none of which they may enjoy while they are alive), and revenge for a feeling of humiliation from the modern world (names withheld). Their willingness to commit murder is organizational in nature, i.e., as members of an army, and not from `a proclivity to die.' The flawed religious thinking of the suicide bomber is exposed too, when they falsely assert that killing one's self in battle is a proper Islamic religious ideal. On the contrary, killing enemies in battle is Jihad, not killing yourself, an idea which originated in the 20th Century. Why would God go to all the trouble of making you fit for eternal life, cleansing you in body and soul, and then ask you to blow yourself into nasty little pieces?
Sleeplessness and the endless repetition of texts and prayers are given as methods for deadening the senses of SBs, and as training to facilitate their departure from this world. This book is a real eye-opener and should be read to rouse those who slumber in complacency.

Boston Bombings got me thinking about this book

A friend got me thinking about where/if the Boston bombings fit in the historical and cultural trajectory of suicide missions. Although we may not yet know enough about the Boston incident to categorize it as a suicide mission, I recommended this book to my social networks because it is an incredible collection of deeply careful, interesting essays. It was one of the best books I read in grad school (public policy masters program). Although it is self-admittedly not a comprehensive taxonomy of all suicide missions in all contexts, the essays rely heavily on empirical evidence to frame important and sometimes unexpected questions. The work also serves the interested reader by offering exquisitely precise thinking on suicide missions (in both heroic and nefarious contexts), and also by being historically and culturally comparative (addressing Kamikaze, Tamil Tigers, Palestineans, Al-Qaeda, 9/11, self immolations with intent to kill others, etc). Really spectacular read for anyone trying to understand suicide missions which, tragically, are becoming an ever more relevant topic around the world.

Terrific book with excellent materials on non suicide terror and suicide in which one kills only himself to provide the most insightful approach to understanding the phenomenon of suicide terror while explaining the counter factual cases. Possibly one of the best books ever written on terrorism!

After only a week of listening i feel differently.ive suffered from depression on and off for years.i also suffered severe neglect and abuse as a child.ive always had problems with my self esteem for as long as i can remember.I am now feeling good about myself and actually feeling pretty again even though i am heavily over weight.people are responding to me differently either that or im seeing things differently. im no longer focused on thinking negatively about the people in my life who have either used me abused me or abandoned or mistreated me in some way and that has been bothering me for the last 10 years so i guess my self esteem was damaged. this really worked for me and i hope it works for you. glenn Harrold has a website where he has many different helpful hypnosis cds for smoking addiction positive thinking weightloss and more. GOOD LUCK!

Post surgery blues lifter!

I've always been an active person but ten years ago I ruptured a disc in my back and needed surgery for it. It was a long slow recovery and it bummed me out. A few months ago I again had disc problems, this time a severely herniated disc that was pinching off my sciatic nerve and making my right leg numb and had a major loss of movement in my leg and foot. And again I ended up having surgery and I am in a long and slow recovery process until my nerve regrows(up to a year). I can't run, I'm on restrictive duty at work, I can only walk on the treadmill at the gym because I can't lift anything over 25lbs. This made me extremely depressed as I've always been active and now had to rely on my wife to help me get dressed, tie my shoes, etc. because I couldn't bend to do the things I normally do. I couldn't help around the house or play with the animals and I hated it. I've always relied on myself to get things done and being laid out in recovery was making me feel worthless and like a burden on my wife.
Then I started listening to the 'Build Your Self Esteem' cd that I had originally bought for my wife. What a difference it made after just listening to it for a few days! It really changed my view on how I see things and how I felt about myself. I've never been a 'down and out' type person, I've always maintained a good attitude on life but after my 2nd major injury in ten years I was feeling pretty bad and listening to this cd brought me out of that rather quickly!
I would highly recommend this cd for anyone that has an upcoming surgery or for anyone with the post surgery blues- especially those who need to rely on someone else for a while after their surgery. This would also be great for women with postpartum depression!! I've always believed in the power of the mind and now I also fully believe that these cd's work!!!!!

My Favorite Glenn Harrold CD!

I have about 5 of his CD's and enjoy them all. However, this is the one that I like the best because when I "wake up" after listening, I am SO calm, peaceful and happy the rest of the day, even when dealing with homework struggles! It's easy -- I lay down, listen to Glenn's relaxing voice (which I love), and without any effort go into a deep trance state. A half hour later I am up and feeling great. My 12-year old son who has ADD (hence the homework struggles) enjoys the CD's as well. Sometimes he goes to sleep to them at night. His favorite is the Positive thinking CD. THANKS GLENN!
