Talk about a fascinating and revealing autobiography

"They Shall Not Pass" is the autobiography of Dolores Ibarruri ("La Pasionaria" of the Spanish Civil War, known for her ability to make rousing speeches and come up with great little phrases "No Pasaran - They Shall Not Pass" being her most well known). Ibarurri was one of the leaders of the Spanish Communist Party and her autobiography is perhaps an unintentionally revealing self-portrayl of the sheer banality of evil. As other reviewers have mentioned, Ibarruri tells us a little about herself, but only a little. The remainder of the book is a sad illustration of the moral bankruptcy of Ibarurri and her ilk and perhaps also somewhat illustrative of why the Republicans lost the Spanish Civil War - and even more illustrative of just why Franco and the Nationalists were so much more determined to win unconditionally, being well aware of their fate if Ibarurri and her cohorts gained the victory.

The book's really worth reading as an example of just what the Nationalists were fighting against - as another reviewer mentioned,it's full of revolutionary songs, Ibarurri goes on and on about how the Republican forces were betrayed by the other non-Communist parties within the Republican grouping (conveniently forgetting perhaps that it was the Spanish Communist Party who launched the CivilWar within the Civil War, and that it was the Spanish Communists in military command positions who launched attacks which could only be described as insanely suicidal for purely political reasons).

Ibarruri comes across as an unrepentant Stalinist of the worst sort (keep in mind also that she was one of the architects of the Red Terror at the start of the Civil War, where some 55,000 people were excecuted in the best of Stalinist traditions) and the book provides very little information other than what the Stalinist line was and a good amount of repetition of Communist propaganda lines from the War along with invective and criticism of pretty much every other political party ot grouping on the Republican side.

Most amusing is the description of the Anarchist rule in Catalonia as "Sodom and Gommorah" with no explanation as to why - for a better description of the Anarchists, read Homage to Catalonia by George Orwell, a far more credible writer than Ibarruri. While perhaps not intended, Ibarruri's autobiography is a classic example of the Stalinist / Communist mindset at work - and shows how the Spanish Communist Party was openly attacking their "allies" in the Civil War in an attempt to gain sole power in the Spanish Republic. It's a sad and illustrative account of the banality of evil and the unrepentant mind-set of a Stalinist-era mass-murderess, for that's all Ibarruri was. Victory would have only made her more so, and from the tone of her book and her invective against the Anarchists and POUM, one can imagine what the fate of their supporters would have been under Ibarurri and her fellows - Franco looks positively angelic by comparison and after reading this book, one can well understand what the Nationalists fought for.

OK -I give this book 5 stars, not for the style or brilliance of the content but for the sheer fascination of looking into the mindset of a person who, while not responsible for the sheer volume of deaths, pain and suffering as Mao or Stalin, certainly shared the same intentions.

Comments: Mike Campbell - you'll note I said "....Franco looks positively angelic by comparison". Anyone with any knowledge of the Spanish Civil War knows Franco was no angel. A hard man for a hard task. Ibarurri on the other hand was an unrepentant Stalinist of the worst sort - the torture and slaughter of the POUM leadership by the Spanish Communists illustrates that, if nothing else. As always with the left, the revolution devoured its own. A foretaste of what would have come, no doubt. One can only look at the players and what they did and say, well, at least the good guys won.

They shall not pass is both a sad and informative commentary on the communist propaganda surrounding the Spanish Civil War. What begins as a sometimes touching autobiography soon descends into shameless promotion of the position of the communist party, and vicious slander against the anarchists and POUM. It is interesting if only as a testement to the lengths the communist party was willing to go in attacking their allies, in order to consolidate power in Republican Spain.

Excellent resource for rookie preppers!

While this material may be just "common sense" for many people, I found it to be extremely helpful. As a widow who relied upon her husband for 35 years to take care of many of the day to day preparedness tasks, from finances to household repairs, yard work, and security, I have found it frightening to feel so vulnerable without him. I have watched Mr. Kobler's Southern Prepper 1 You Tube Channel and have learned a great deal. do it was only natural to purchase a book he collaborated upon. To have this information summarized and systematically presented is a great comfort to me and quite empowering to realize that I can, in fact learn to take care of myself, as well as perhaps learn new skills to help take care of others. As a retired pastor, I deeply appreciate that the authors begin their book with how to develop a strong spiritual foundation to enhance one's physical survivablility. The plan they lay out in the whole book should be easy for most people to follow if they are willing to develop the self discipline approach to prepping set forth in the book. I highly recommend the book for neophyte preppers. Well done.

It Doesn't Get More Practical & Applicable Than This!!!

Really a practical resource... As others have mentioned it goes beyond the "beans, bullets & band aids" and adds some very important items that many books fail to address... Body, Soul and Budget are often overlooked and I think they are really vital... I know it has motivated me to rededicate myself to increasing my level of fitness... Some have complained that the book is too short or too shallow... I can sort of understand that BUT I also think that it is good because of that... It is not a 600 page manual that a reader will get intimidated by and never apply because they are overwhelmed... I also appreciated how practical and applicable it was... Didn't get all bogged down in this brand vs. that brand... I also appreciated the fact that is revealed to me a couple of areas where I was out of balance... I don't think I am alone in thinking that because I have some training, I have done research, and because I am "at it" diligently that I automatically do things in the right ratio... I see in my life how some things I have neglected- and others where I can probably ease off a little until I restore the balance... Love the Youtube channel Southernprepper1and have been a HUGE fan of all of Mark's other books as well... Great job!!! This is a "must have" for the novice and veteran alike...

Reading Level Too High

Not only do the directions not allow you to build a decent replica, this book is too hard for a 4th Grader to read. The information is good but it is written at at 7th Grade level. Most 4th Graders cannot read this on their own an get much out of it.

Nice photos; terrible plans

While the introduction was interesting, we got this book as a guide to build a scale model of the mission.

The three pages of instructions were completely useless in building anything like the mission. Had we looked more closely, we would have seen that the model in their instructions don't look anything like the actual building. I have to wonder if an editor even looked at the directions before printing it.

The photos were enough for us to use, but still ... if they're going to include instructions, they should actually accomplish their desired goal.
