Catastrophe, family crisis: but what is worse than a health crisis that brings down not only the person who is sick, but pretty much everyone else around them. Humor helps to get us through the worst of times, but only some of us are capable of resurrecting humor in a bad situation - when that situation is, a horrendous health problem belonging to us! She sensitively addresses the loss of friendships as well as the alienation of family members, and loss of the ability to work.

My Crazy Life: A Humorous Guide to Understanding Mast Cell Disorders’ by Pamela Hodge covers all the bases and would be choice reading for anyone trying to help someone with their deadly illness, or just from the aspect of wanting to be the best of all possible friends to that person. Her husband weighs in with enthusiasm and frankness to all those partners - so that even that aspect of this struggle, is illuminated. Having MCAS and CIU myself (Mast Cell Activation Syndrome and Chronic Idiopathic Urticaria [hives]) for over five years, I can say from experience that this is a horribly debilitating disease.

Pam touches on all areas and provides readers with links to sites to locate not only more disease related information, but also information on hypoallergenic soaps or makeup. She does her best to be a wellspring of minute by minute quips to help the person or family member, cope. Since there is no area of your life that does not require major change in an effort to hold this “disease” at bay (or condition - but I would call it a disease), she thoroughly and accurate depicts the necessary work that goes into redoing ones’ life during this process. Don’t overlook this book because it is written by a lay person - you would be missing out on very sound, and also very humorous, advice.

A must read for Mast Cell patients, their families, friends and physicians!

I just finished reading a sample of this book from Amazon and am now placing my order for the paperback version. Having just been officially dx with a severe form of Mast Cell Disease, requiring lifelong chemotherapy, I was overjoyed to see this book. I love the writing style of the author, the quotes, helpful suggestions and a solid description of these dreaded disorders. I laughed and cried but more importantly thought 'finally, a book that my family, friends and physicians (Yes, even physicians) can understand. Thank you to the author for sharing your journey and knowledge on Mast Cell. I will be recommending this book to everyone! Great Job !!

Well done! An easy read

Pam Hodge has taken what was absolute and utter chaos for her and her family and transformed it into a well written and easy to understand book about a rare illness. She walks the reader through her life from discovery of the issues, to ultimate diagnosis, and treatment with amazing clarity. I'm in awe of her ability to still smile and inject humor into what would have brought most of us to our knees.

The reality is that most of us take our health for granted. Only when someone we love and deal with on a day to day basis do we stop and appreciate this gift. Pam helps us to savor the health we have with brutal honesty.

I hope she takes the time to let us, the reader, know how things are progressing and the new discoveries she will continue to make in the future. I'm anxious for the sequel!

These roughly chronological essays, many published in the local press, bare the rage and humor that, with booze and drugs, friendships and enmities, served to speed along the timeclock's "suffocating minute hand." A fourth-generation factory worker, raised on hard music, hard liquor and soft drugs, given a parochial school education, Hamper was the eldest of eight children deserted by their father, supported by their mother. He was determined not to be an auto worker but soon after high school, married and a father, he needed the steady work GM offered. With free-ranging intelligence and a sharply anarchic sensibility, he tries to figure out and establish some control over his place in GM's massive corporate system. Hamper, a son, a grandson, and a great-grandson of General Motors' "shoprats," chronicles ten years spent in an abusive marriage with GM in Flint, Michigan. Despite exploitative management policies, arrogant and/or incompetent supervisors, and mind-numbing working conditions, Hamper, like the abused spouse who keeps returning to the abuser, becomes de pressed during layoffs and revives when recalled to the assembly line. Hamper copes with his perceived limited options by consuming impressive quantities of alcohol and writing an irreverent, cynically humorous column about shoprat life for an alternative newspaper. How much of Hamper's alienation and later panic disorder are the result of his ten years at GM and how much are due to genetics and choices is unexplored. Another weakness is Hamper's graceless style and his overuse of four-letter words. Despite these shortcomings, blue-collar voices are rarely heard, and therefore this is recommended for public libraries.

Based on his ``Rivethead'' column that has appeared in Midwest newspapers as well as in Mother Jones, here is Hamper's tortured description of his wretched career as a General Motors worker in the factories of Flint, Michigan. A fourth generation ``shoprat'' (one uncle spent 45 years at the Buick Engine Plant), Hamper explains how an irresponsible father, numerous siblings, and his own penchant for laziness, drugs, and taverns pointed directly to a future in the plants, despite his inclinations toward poetry and music. In 1977, he reluctantly began work in the cab shop (a place with a noise level ``like some hideous unrelenting tape loop of trains having sex''). Ranging from this experience to his retirement ten years later, Hamper writes of the drudgery of factory labor; repeated layoffs and call-backs; extensive on-the-job alcohol and drug consumption by himself and fellow workers; ongoing battles with foremen and supervisors; and his quest, similar to that of his mentor, Michael Moore, director of Roger and Me, to go bowling with GM chairman Roger Smith. His ``Rivethead'' series hardly endeared him to management, nor did his often obnoxious behavior. In 1986, at about the time his column first appeared in Mother Jones, he began to experience ``severe panic disorder,'' or anxiety attacks, and has spent the past few years in and out of a mental-health clinic. Although perceptively critical of American business management, practice, and values, Hamper nearsightedly finds little of worth or integrity in his fellow workers, and is downright offensive toward women, who, in his world, ``lust for summer sausage.'' Funny and brutally honest. A snapshot of the UAW in the 80's

My dad started at GM in 1971 and retired on disability in 1996. I myself worked in the factory that made Chevy Baretta windows in the 80's. I say that because I don't want anyone to take this review as putting down UAW members or autoworkers.

To say the least, Mr Hamper has a voice and a sense of humor that capture those noisy, smelly, overheated factories that spit out the low quality flashy junk Detroit produced in the late 70's and early 80's. He chronicles the alcohol and rock music that fueled the shenanigans that went on the parking lots and nearby bars just as well.

Sadly, this book is also a tale of mental illness and the American auto industry's failed first attempts to achieve the quality of the Japanese cars that were suddenly outselling the best efforts of the "Big Three".

If you ever shot a rivet on an assembly line, or loved someone who did then you'll probably like this book. It's also a good read for anyone who remembers sex, drugs, and rock & roll of the 70's and 80's with any fondness.

"We've gotta get out of this place, if it's the last thing we ever do...."

Something to which author Ben Hamper doesn't necessarily subscribe is the so-called "Puritan work ethic". This well-written, funny, and covertly disturbing journal of life on the assembly line makes it abundantly clear that Mr. Hamper's ambitions lay no further than that day's "quittin' time" and the subsequent stop at the neighborhood bar. It's a life which, according to him at least, was almost pre-destined upon birth and which would lead to an early grave if he'd allow it to continue as such.

Booze, drugs, and rock & roll figure prominently in this life. In fact, one often gets the impression this "life" represents the rule and not the exception. His keen, detailed reportage of daily events leads one to believe that he's just "one of the guys", a cog in the industrial complex wherein if a man or woman can last thirty years then there'll be joy at the end of some north-of-Flint rainbow. But therein lies the rub.

Combinations of daily repetitious routine, lack of a clear sense of purpose, and guiltless self-destructive habits can make thirty years seem like an eternity. After reading this book, I came away thinking this was not only endemic to the life of an autoworker, but also downright insane.

What I found disappointing in Hamper's account was an apparent lack of discernment as to the role of his union in making the pay and working conditions as "tolerable" as they were. The book's few instances where the union local played a part were as if its presence was taken for granted as much as the plant's lifelong presence in his town; i.e. an impervious constituent of life's landscape. Ultimately, it was not to be.

However, as prideful a "rivethead" as he was, I think Hamper's ultimate point was that this was not going to be the lifetime calling he had envisioned. The accounts of his serendipitous success as a column writer and the notoriety it engendered made for some great reading; a true story of redemption which has not seen its final chapter.

I heartily recommend this book to everyone...not just current and prospective "shoprats".

"Rivethead" describes life on the GM assembly line.

Ben Hamper's outrageous description of life on the
car and truck assembly line had me laughing out loud at the antics of both workers and bosses at the GM factory in Flint, Michigan. Hamper uses words like rivets and blasts them at the nearest human target; no one escapes his savage attack, not even himself. Hamper is a "flake" and he knows it, but he is an observant flake who is just as adept at turning a phrase as he is finding ways to avoid work. About the Author
Sheila Curran Bernard is an Emmy and Peabody Award-winning filmmaker and the author of Documentary Storytelling, a best selling guide to story and structure in nonfiction filmmaking, and , a guide to using archival footage and material in films. Her archival film credits include the series Eyes on the Prize, I'll Make Me a World, This Far By Faith, America's War on Poverty, and School, for which she also co-wrote the companion book. She has taught at Princeton University and Westbrook College and recently joined the faculty of the University at Albany, State University of New York.

When making a documentary, this book is a great place to start

In filmmaking of any kind, it is the camera that tells a story. Documentary filmmaking is no different in terms that it is still the camera that is the key witness. The difference is in approach and construction. Sheila Curran Bernard's third edition of this textbook is timely and well detailed. "Documentary Storytelling" underscores that no matter the technical aspects of shooting and editing, the improtance of telling a good story in a documentary just as much as in a fictional film cannot be stressed enough.

Research, writing good treatments, and the importance of craft rather than a formulaic model are discussed in detail. Important aspects of documentary filmmaking such as the business side of film - such as budgeting for the film, pre-production, production, promotion and selling and putting your work out in the film festival circuit are also discussed. These are areas of the industry that is usually not given nearly enough attention. Sheila Curran Bernard has put together a great textbook where other documentary filmmakers were interviewed about what they do and the best way to put out work that captivates an audience.

Whether you want to be behind the camera as a director, editor, producer working for a big studio or as an independent filmmaker, I would definitely recommend this book. This new edition would also be great for any film / media studies student or even for communications / media or film departments to consider using this as a teaching text.

A very enjoyable read, and very helpful as well!

'Documentary Storytelling' is an interesting book, but unlike what I expected. I expected more of a technical tome on how to make documentaries, with sections on lighting, sound, and editing. What I got was more of an overview of what makes a documentary instead just a 'non-fictional' film.

Author Bernard makes some excellent points on her way to divining what makes an excellent documentary. She believes that documentaries are a sub-set of the non-fictional film. It's not journalism. She expects documentarians to have a viewpoint, and to bring that viewpoint to center stage in his/her film. But she doesn't expect a political diatribe. She writes that the filmmaker needs to be fair, and to present both sides of a story. The filmmaker doesn't have to be impartial, though; he/she can and should have a point of view they want to get across.

One example she cites is 'Harlan County, USA' an award-winning documentary about a coal strike in Kentucky. Filmmaker Barbara Kopple had a definite point of view, which is obvious if you've seen the film. But it does strike a fair note by allowing differing viewpoints into her film.

Another point she made that I've never thought about is that the documentary should be made like a fictional film; that is, it must have compelling characters, and interesting story, strong visuals, and good writing. Yes, writing. Narration is going to be written, and interview questions are going to have to be written. A documentary may not be storyboarded, or have a plot, but it does need to have an orderly progression to it.

A great example of an excellent (even groundbreaking) documentary is 'The Thin Blue Line'. I remember how astounded I was when I first saw this film. It uses all of Bernard's ideas and then some. The film resulted in an innocent man getting justice after being falsely convicted in the murder of a police officer. I very, very highly recommend that film!

Highly recommended. If you are interested in watching documentaries, teaching documentaries, or even making documentaries, you need to read this book. Five stars for 'Documentary Storytelling'.

I keep giving my copies away!

This is my third copy of this book, I received it as a review copy, but I'm glad to have it on my shelf again - I keep giving it away to associates who are interested in documentaries. There are other books on the subject that are better technical guides to filming, Directing the Documentary, Fifth Edition, for instance, or even, The Shut Up and Shoot Documentary Guide: A Down & Dirty DV Production, but for someone who is considering whether a particular story would make a good documentary, or who is trying to find the best way to frame a story for a documentary, this is a much better place to start.

I have given copies of this book to potential backers in documentary projects to help them to understand both my process and what I was hoping to accomplish in terms of telling a particular story. In both cases the backer had lots of great ideas they wanted to contribute, but unfortunately, many of their ideas would have sidetracked the story being told. Knowing what to leave out, is sometimes as important as knowing what to put in, but for many people the ability to do this is not intuitive. I have found this book to be an excellent ally in helping potential contributors to better understand the importance of a defined scope in terms of telling a story.

Aside from the pedagogical aspects, this book is a really good read for anyone interested in the art of documentary filmmaking. I highly recommend it.

About the Author
Francis Glebas worked as a story artist for Disney Feature Animation on Aladdin, Lion King, Pocahontas, Hunchback of Notre Dame, Dinosaur, Treasure Planet and Hercules. He also directed Pomp and Circumstance starring Donald Duck in Fantasia 2000 and Piglet's BIG Movie. Francis is also an award-winning independent live action movie maker with almost 40 years' experience. He currently teaches storyboarding at Gnomon School of Visual Effects. Francis also works as a creative consultant, having worked with the Irish Government, Korean Government, General Motors, Los Alamos Labs, Walt Disney Imagineering and other film studios.

Love the flipbook + companion CD!

First of all, the book is a lot bigger than I thought. It just sticks out on my bookshelf lol, but I'm fine with it because I really love the flipbook section; it's really cute :P. Anyway, this is a great animation book for anyone interested to learn more about animation. I have this book and the Character Animation Crash Course by Eric Goldberg, and I find both books very helpful. Goldberg's book teaches something Glebas doesn't teach (more technical), and Glebas teaches something Goldberg doesn't. But I have to say I learned more from the Animator's eyes because the author covers stuff like storyboarding, adding color and sound which no other animation books cover. If you already have the animator's survival kit, you don't really need character animation crash course because they are more or less the same. The Animator's Eye is different though, you will totally learn something new from it. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to further his or her knowledge about animation.

The book I've been waiting for

I worked in the industry back when before moving into a teaching career. I know the animation principles that any new animator must learn so I know what to look for in a text book. Over the years the text books I've assigned for the college animation courses I have taught have come and gone. A common problem is a lack of depth into the more intricate working of development and didactic graphics. There also is, quite often, a one size fits all approach to explanations of animation principles and methods.

The principles of animation are our tools. We use them to build our animations so once we have knowledge of a animation principle (such as squash & stretch) we can build anything we'd like with them or use them in a personal and more expressive way than others may choose to do.

Francis understands this. Francis book provides the necessary information new animators need to launch their learning experience without the "do it like this" verbiage. Francis gives the reader information on the tools with user friendly graphics that leaves the personal and particular "how to" decisions in the hands of the developing animation student. At last!

It's an excellent fun read, packed full of gotta have information on the universal principles of animation.Additionally he also has information on layout, planning and the classic components of camera, composition and design necessary in building an animation.That's quite a package.

The principles he shares are used in all forms of animation...2 and 3D, stop-motion and digital. We all use them so the information in this book has universal appeal and application.

It is the book I've been waiting for. It will be the assigned text in all of my animation courses from here on.

Covers It All

First off, you have to love the flip-book on the edge of the pages of The Animator's Eye. It works just like film but breaks it down. This book, the author Francis Glebas and his characters Iggy and Scared Bunny are a lot of fun, but don't let that fool you, this book is filled with a mass of serious information. When it comes right down to it, animation in the form of storytelling covers a huge amount of stuff just to get it get it done - and even more to make it "moving" and fun. This book gets "it". Even though a person could dig into any these areas for more info, the author gets what is takes to get started in animation and covers what is helpful to advance a career.

I'm coming from a background of drawing illustration skills that transitioned to graphic arts on a computer. I also have interests in photography and video. Not being wholly advanced in the animation world, I can only guess what level of experience would find interest in this book. Yet, given the range of information from drawing, to movement, to gestures, to color, to storytelling, to sound, to lip sync, to organization, to structure, to production, just to mention some of what Glebas covers, I think even the very advanced animator would find something to improve upon. For the beginner this should be a must. This book takes me back to some my earliest drawing classes and reinforces some of their very best principles in a more compelling and informative way, like the use of balance and weight to give life to mere lines. The author shows you how to create three dimensional characters with the illusion of life-like movement so as to avoid what he refers to as "zombies".

I like the way he builds from simple basics to get a character and story across. I love the emotional wheel. Art classes have gotten me used to the color wheel (which the author also takes great advantage of in the book) but I never thought to use a wheel for emotions, expressions, and gestures. Simple is better. I really like his use of post-it notes to produce a very simple but moving and easily edited story board. That makes so much organizational and productive sense. Like the author, I have always thought that tracing was a very valid method for learning the way others draw (which was sometimes frowned upon). He touches on helpful software to match your character with the appropriate color, sound, and environment that givs life and emotion to enhance and drive the animators vision. Glebas gives lots of helpful ideas to make animation work better and the process work more easily.

The accompanying DVD shows the finished animation along with the earlier working versions to give you some idea of what to look for and how to progress. One of my favorite things on the DVD is where the author makes a video of himself to show exaggerated emotions and lip movement to use for references for drawing believable character expressions and speech.

The Animator's Eye covers a lot of material, all with practical means to get professional results that will capture your audience's attention and sweep them off into a truly "believable" fantasy world just like Disney does.
