The second printing (July 2014) corrects color and print issues making this an excellent follow-up to the first edition.

**UPDATE 2**
I have purchased the second printing of this second edition and I am very happy with the corrections. The richer colors add new life to Sibley's paintings, the text is clear and easy to read and the layout is much improved. Page space is better utilized in this edition, allowing Sibley's beautiful illustrations to take center stage. The only caution I add is that, to my knowledge, there is no way to know what printing of the second edition you are purchasing when ordering through Amazon.com.

**UPDATE**
The second printing has been released and should be available at brick & mortar book stores as well as a number of online stores. Hopefully Amazon will make a distinction between the first and second printings so that its customers can order the correct one. In case there is no way of knowing which printing you are buying from Amazon, I offer the following 2 options:

1) Go to a brick and mortar book store and physically purchase the guide. You will want to turn to the copyright page and look for "Second printing, July 2014". If it says "Second Edition, March 2014" then you are holding the first printing with the off colors and light font.

2) Go to an alternative online source such as Buteo Books, where the second printing is in stock, available for shipping and it is specified as the second printing. They even have the option to buy the first printing if one is so inclined.

When I obtain the second printing, I will update this review. So far, I have heard good things: the font is readable and the colors are more representative of what one would see in the field. I'm looking forward to this second printing!

A very annoying feature of this guide is the font. Not the size necessarily, but where many of the bird illustrations are WAY too dark, the font is way too light and lacks contrast. I keep tilting the book to get a better angle as if the text is catching or reflecting light but it's not. I have great eyesight, but I find the text a strain to read. Many of the birds are too dark and the colors are simply wrong. This shouldn't be a matter of opinion. The book betrays itself with statements like "brilliant red" on the scarlet tanager when it's obviously showing dark red; "flaming-orange throat" on the blackburnian when it's dark orange; "bright orange-red bill (never as dark red as many Caspians)" on the royal tern, well it's not bright and when you flip to the Caspian it's almost the same color! The orange-crowned warbler is green, the hooded warbler has a highlighter-yellow face, the baltimore oriole's orange is more like an american robin's red and there are many more disappointments. Some of the bird's faces are so dark that you can barely discern any detail. Sibley set the bar and his second edition does not measure up.

Update: Thank you to R. Matz for providing a link to an article from birdforum.net in which Sibley has stated in a Facebook correspondence "There are a few images (like the male Scarlet Tanager) that are obviously not OK and will be corrected in the next printing, but I think that involves a very small number of images. The font is another issue, and it's clear that too many are finding it hard to read. Tests are already being done to find a way to fix that in the next printing."

Improving the readability of the text will be a major improvement. Along with the male Scarlet Tanager, I hope Sibley will fix color issues with the following birds:
- Eastern and Western Bluebirds (too dark)
- Orange-crowned Warbler (too green)
- Blackburnian Warbler (make the orange "flaming")
- Baltimore Oriole (brighten the orange)
- Lighten some of the birds on which the facial features cannot be discerned

I look forward to the next printing (which should be available this September)and the fixes it will offer. A "Thank you" to B. Walker for contacting Knopf to find out that a fix is in the works and that we should have a new print available to purchase by late Summer.

Wait for a better printing

Sibley's First Edition is my birding bible. Sadly, the font chosen for this edition is so thin I find it unreadable with normal reading glasses. I have no such problem with the First edition. Also, colors are so saturated they are misleading in some species, especially with reds. These problems are a huge disservice to David Sibley's outstanding artwork. I am returning it, as the delicate text is unreadable, making it useless to me, and I imagine to many folks over 50. A huge disappointment, as I'd looked forward to Sibley's new plates and the expanded information in the text, but I can't read it without a magnifying glass! A big mistake by the publisher. I regretfully caution folks who need reading glasses to wait for a better printing.

Disappointed, returned it

No one can question Sibley's technical and artistic skills when it comes to birding, but similar to other reviews, I simply couldn't read the text. The font was too small and the font color was too washed out. Literally, after 5 minutes, I just couldn't read more.
Just to be clear too, I would not classify this as a field guide. It is way too heavy for that, it's literally 3 lbs and I doubt few would venture into the field with this. I work out with weights 5 days a week and this book is heavy, partly driven by the high quality paper,
It's clear that Sibley put huge effort into the illustrations and updating the content. And kudos to him for that! But you have to question the editors who laid out some of the content. I just found the layout often fragmented and hard to follow.
As a pure field guide, I still prefer the National Geographic Guide. It's simpler to use, find your birds faster and provides more succinct and helpful written descriptions.
As a reference source, Sibley's new edition is fine, but for an everyday go to bird guide, it doesn't work for me and I returned it.

Paul Getty Museum, where his exhibitions and companion publications Engaged Observers: Documentary Photography since the Sixties and Edward Weston: Enduring Vision both received the Lucie Award for Curator/Exhibition of the Year.

Very original and truly beautiful book! Interesting to mention that it is produced by the same designer, Kelly Doe who did Titarenko's previous book and is an outstanding book designer. She is also an Art Director at the New York Times. Titarenko's autobiographical essay is well worth reading.
Many images have never been published before and are outstanding.

What if..

It is a "what might have" story of Michelangelo in Instanbul. In this "historical" novel, he takes an offer from the Pasha to build a bridge. It is all plausible, but not necessarily true.
The story is only vaguely interesting as a possible interlude in Michelangelo's life. It adds nothing to popular common knowledge about Michelangelo as an artist and man.

good survey of "modern" architecture and tools for building modern web apps

Having just wrapped up "Client-Server Web Apps with JavaScript and Java" by Casimir Saternos (O'Reilly, 2014), I'd say that I _mostly_ got out of it what I wanted, and that it serves as a good jumping-off point for developers that want to build "modern" web applications on top of the JVM. More than anything else, Saternos' book is a thumbnail sketch of the architecture and tools needed to build those kind of apps, but it does not go particularly deep on any one of those items. As it says in the preface, it's probably best suited for developers who primarily work in Java and want to build a scalable web application with modern technologies -- not that front-end developers don't stand to gain something as well, but they may have more catching up to do (more on this in a moment...).

Saternos' basic approach here is to describe "modern" web applications as RESTful, API-based back-ends that primarily serve JSON to a rich front-end that is built around something like AngularJS. However, he doesn't limit himself to just the API and front-end layers here. Even a glance at the table of contents will reveal that he goes for breadth in his discussion: there are chapters on REST fundamentals and API design, API implementation with tools like Jersey, testing strategies with JUnit and Jasmine, build and deployment tooling, virtualization strategies, and more. The book's coverage is fairly shallow, but Saternos provides many references to other sources for richer coverage, and he also provides sample code with example implementations for each relevant chapter.

Was there anything missing? Yes and no... Again: the book is a shallow survey of these technologies, and as such it elegantly fulfills its main mission: to give an overview of the technologies that you would use when constructing a modern web application in the JVM. And again: there are plenty of references to solid foundational texts for those instances where you need to go deeper on some particular subject. But there are also seem to be some gaps.

First, some front-end developers may feel a bit lost coming into this; working in the JVM can be a bit daunting to the new-comer, and piling dynamic languages on top of this can be a bit eyebrow-raising. Part of me thinks that this is absolutely the right move -- I know a lot of front-end developers that are right at home in Ruby or Python, and so using JRuby or Jython as the introduction to the JVM makes sense. But there are also esoteric complications that come along with that which are not really addressed in the book. Not that a survey such as this is the right place to cover that kind of edge-case trivia, but a footnote to that effect may have been useful.

Second, the chapter on "Packaging and Deployment" focused exclusively on the server side of the web application with no substantive mention of how to package the front-end assets. Where was the discussion of minification and concatenation? Considering the depth of the discussion on REST and HTTP earlier in the book, I would have expected to loop back around on that here for a discussion of CDNs or Expires headers. This seemed like a lost opportunity to me.

In the grand scheme of what Saternos set out to do however, those critiques are pretty minor. That he assumes the reader has more familiarity with the JVM than with front-end technologies is evident, but not a detriment. The book is a good look into what technologies and techniques make up a "modern" web application, and though there is plenty of room for disagreement about some of his recommendations, it is also a great "conversation-starter" for your project, and chances are that you'll learn about a thing or two that you'll want to chase down further.

A developers notebook, rather than a tutorial.

This book provides an overview of Web app development using javascript and the Java virtual machine (JVM). The approach taken by the author is to point you to various online resources (tutorials and articles) after providing a quick introduction/discussion of a given technology or tool. So although this book is very short (225 pages) it provides a very broad scope of topics from IDEs to software life cycle management (build and deployment technologies), so provides at least an order of magnitude more material than the page count. This means to get full value out of the book while reading you need have an internet connection and a browser - so I would recommend the Kindle edition over the print version as this will save you having to type in the numerous compact URLs that are provided throughout the book.

The book would have better been called Client-Server Web-Apps with Javascript and the JVM - rather than Java. The JVM is a state machine that runs a bytecode that can be generated by a compiler of a programming language - Java being the eponymous one, but there are several others: Scala, Clojure, Dart, Jython, JRuby, Groovy etc., and the book goes into some length to examine some of these alternatives.

This book's target audience is the experienced developer who is looking to move to JVM Web-App development. Less experienced programmers will probably find the book hard to follow as there is no narrative app that pulls all the threads together.

Nice Overview

This is a great overview of the popular technologies used to create Java EE web applications. For an experienced developer this is a great way to discover nuances and technologies outside of your expertise areas.

The chapter on "REST and JSON" is perhaps the best overview I've read of REST, with a trivial mention of JSON.

I don't really care for the bit.ly URLs which are sprinkled through the book since in many ways they are more difficult to type than a clear but longer URL, but the book does contain a wealth of these URLs for further investigation.

You won't "learn" any specific technology by reading this book but it may help you understand the big picture and expose you to a few ideas you may have only vaguely heard of.

So if you are an expert Java EE developer but you haven't had a chance to work with Maven, JQuery, Jython, JRuby, Angular, VMWare, VirtualBox, Vagrant, Packer, LXC, Docker, Jasmine, Cucumber, etc, etc, reading this book should make you a more well rounded developer (or at least more aware of these technologies). Don't expect to learn any Java (nor any JavaScript other than several examples of flaws in JavaScript), but do expect to gain awareness of some other technologies that may benefit you.

The author does a very good job of pointing out that JavaScript is flawed, yet this book falls short of showing you how to use JavaScript effectively (instead it points you to read a few resources like "Douglas Crockford's JavaScript: The Good Parts").
