About the Author
Eugene Bardach has been teaching graduate-level policy analysis workshop classes since 1973 at the Goldman School of Public Policy, University of California, Berkeley, in which time he has coached some 500 projects. He is a broadly based political scientist with wide-ranging teaching and research interests. His focus is primarily on policy implementation and public management, and most recently on problems of facilitating better interorganizational collaboration in service delivery (e.g., in human services, environmental enforcement, fire prevention, and habitat preservation). He also maintains an interest in problems of homeland defense regulatory program design and execution, particularly in areas of health, safety, consumer protection, and equal opportunity. Bardach has developed novel teaching methods and materials at Berkeley, has directed and taught in residentially based training programs for higher-level public managers, and has worked for the Office of Policy Analysis at the US Department of Interior. He is the recipient of the 1998 Donald T. Campbell Award of the Policy Studies Organization for creative contribution to the methodology of policy analysis. This book is based on his experience teaching students the principles of policy analysis and then helping them to execute their project work. Eric M. Patashnik teaches policy analysis at the Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy, University of Virginia. He previously held faculty positions at Yale University and at the UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs. Patashnik is a Nonresident Senior Fellow of the Brookings Institution, an elected fellow of the National Academy of Public Administration, and the editor (beginning 2016) of the Journal of Health Politics, Policy and Law. He received his Master's in Public Policy degree from the Goldman School of Public Policy, University of California, Berkeley. He served as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs of the Batten School from 2009-2012. Patashnik's research focuses on the politics of American national policymaking, especially health policy, the welfare state, and the role of Congress. He received the Jefferson Foundation Award for excellence in teaching at UVA. He is the author or editor of numerous books, including Reform at Risk: What Happens After Major Policy Changes Are Enacted which won the Louis Brownlow Book Award from the National Academy of Public Administration. Earlier in his career, Patashnik was a legislative analyst for the U.S. House Subcommittee on Elections.

Still the Gold Standard

This book remains the gold standard for introducing students to key issues in policy analysis. I have used it many times in teaching Policy Analysis courses for both students and practicing policy analysts. The new edition adds a lot of helpful new material (e.g., discussions of choice architecture and an excellent new chapter on policy design) that will be helpful to students struggling to think systematically about how to assess policy alternatives. Despite its broad scope, it is still quite compact. It is too dense to have students read through for a single class session, but works very well when assigned in chunks--e.g., on selecting criteria and alternatives, assembling evidence, and learning from "smart practices" in other political jurisdictions and policy sectors. Applying the analytical framework of the Eightfold Path with empirical case materials provided by the instructor helps students develop skills in utilizing the framework. Other books like Stokey & Zeckhauser, Wheelan and Weimer & Vining concentrate on economic and technical analytical skills that are essential to policy analysis, but no other sources covers the process of policy analysis with the same depth and insight as Bardach and Patashnik.

Incredibly helpful and easy to use method for policy analysis

I used this book for my Master of Public Policy program and it really is a classic for a reason. It lays out such a helpful structure for thinking about complex policy problems, and I've even used some of the techniques in analyzing problems or policies for stories now in my job as a journalist. Bardach and Patashnik give helpful examples of how to actually put this method into practice-- this is not just academic garble, but it's designed to actually be useful and helpful.

Easy to Forget Artwork

The idea for a book of the best watercolors each year is fine but after looking through this latest annual of water media works I left rather unimpressed. The book itself is beautiful: sturdy binding, excellent visuals and easy to read print on very nice shiny paper, but it is the paintings chosen from around the country (and other parts of the world) that disappointed me. I know there are terrific painters out there and the ones that are included are not the best paintings today. Many of the paintings are either loosely painted, experimental or just not very strong.

Artists had to pay to submit their work which was juried. I would suggest the publishers have an invitation to let artists submit up to three images for free. It would attract a lot more entries and the reward would be the inclusion in the book. Artists are always having to pay fees and shelling out money. In this pathetic economy I am afraid these type books are going to become less and less impressive as accomplished painters will ignore entering to be included. (Most successful artists don't need this kind of publicity anyway.)

I would recommend buying a book or catalog of your favorite artist (if they are in print) and study their work rather than buying this book which has over 100 paintings which are on the whole rather average. There are a few paintings that are eye popping but only a few. Save your money.

Another Great Splash Book

Another great Splash book. I like this one a lot. I had read some reviews that did not like it, but I have to disagree. There are new artists in it with great paintings. Nice to see new artists as well as the "usual" ones. Would like to have a larger section on florals and less on animals. But that is just my taste. The People in Motion section is great (wish that one was longer too) but Facing the Soul takes care of that. The City Sights section is awesome. And Landscape View is wonderful. Artistic Arrangements is very good and goes beyond they typical still life arrangements. I have all the Splash Series books and look forward to the next one. My only suggestion might be to add more dialogue on each painting regarding process, colors used etc. Maybe in a future Splash could have section on abstracts? Thank you Rachel Rubin Wolf. I do recommend this book.

Storm Chaser

I love a great romantic suspense, and when you add paranormal to the mix, it doesn't get much better. Atticus Chase is the enforcer of the Chase pride, the youngest but largest of the Chase brothers, and barely in control of his lion. To keep his animal calm, Atticus fights in illegal street fights, where his size and strength keep him at the top until a woman fighter is scheduled for his next bout.
Sophia is a champion who has been promised five thousand dollars to go one round with Atticus, win or lose. Hitting a woman goes against everything he believes and he refuses to fight her, but she convinces him to go a round, then knocks him out him when he gets distracted. A few days later, Atticus sees her leave a bar, only to be attacked by three men who followed her out. She knocks two out and Atticus scares the third away, but the stress causes Sophia to shift. Which normally wouldn't be a problem, except that Sophia has no idea she's a shifter, her animal has complete control, and a rogue is a threat to the safety of all shifters. Sophia's very life is now in the hands of the new shifter Council and they have given her a week to learn to control her shifts, or she will be put down.

This book was a little heavy on the sex for my tastes, but was otherwise a great story. Fast, fun, and left me wanting to know more about the Chase brothers!

Excellent 4.5 star Contemporary paranormal (shifters) romance with intrigue & suspense.

4.5 stars This was an excellent contemporary paranormal (shifter) intrigue & suspense filled romance. I received a free copy of this book from the author solely for an honest opinion. Ms Nash was able to bring the characters and situations to life. This is a stand alone book but personally I think you'd enjoy the books more if you read them in order. Atticus is one of the Chase brothers and they are lions. He is their enforcer and therefore handles all the strong-arming and rough decisions for his pride/family. Sophia has no real memory of her early childhood but spent the latter half in the orphanage. She learned control through marshal arts and meditation. Unfortunately she has no idea she is a shifter herself. Due to this there is a lot of conflict especially when her snow leopard is out she has no human control over it and is dangerous. I love the plot in each of the first 3 books and look forward to reading more books in this set and any other future books by Ms Nash.

About the Author
Jimmie James Jr. has always enjoyed playing all types of competitive games.  Through hard work, he became an expert chess player, crack basketball shot, and scratch golfer.  In 2007, he discovered online poker and instantly became hooked.  Due to his demanding day job, he needed to play games that could fit into a busy schedule and soon moved from tournaments to online cash games.
 
Over the years, he absorbed every bit of poker material he could get his hands on and eventually realized something was missing.  Few teachers had gotten to the core of what exactly makes up a winning poker strategy. Through trial and error, he taught himself how to play by drawing on his competitive background and worked on breaking the game down into core fundamentals. 
 
He now enjoys a higher hourly rate in poker than his "real" job.  In his first book, Automatic Poker, Jim seeks to fill a void and provide a simple and repeatable poker method for poker players of all ages and backgrounds.

Foundation for a solid, aggressive, and flexible strategy

Don't get the wrong idea from the book's title. Automatic Poker doesn't just give you a overly simplistic strategy that you will quickly move on from in a couple weeks. It first outlines a starter strategy that follows sound poker fundamentals of position and aggression that can be played within a few hours of reading the book and printing out the charts. The book then adds to that foundation in the intermediate section with very detailed instructions for setting up a HUD and using it to adjust your play to your opponents. Once through the book you're left with a LAG strategy that uses the benefits of playing with a smaller stack... mainly the ability to set up good stack to pot ratios for over-pair and paired hands more often and avoiding big mistakes with really big pots.

I spent most of my time playing sit and goes and tournaments but wanted to transition to cash games. If your like me or are just starting to play poker then playing with a shorter stack makes a lot of sense. 100 big blind stacks can be pretty awkward to play with and very easy to make costly mistakes with. Short stacking simplifies things and this book has the best info I've seen on playing with a short stack.

Great book that may change your poker career

Very solid for a fundamental book, and great for beginners and shortstackers. I have been a shortstacker for years, but never cross something that devotes a whole book around it. But this book is not just about shortstacking; it offers a great strategy for beginners (position and aggression) to start off and winning with. Then once you get your feet wet, it offers the intermediate strategy to open up and develop up to playing the player, board texture, and ranges. Then the rest of the book is devoted to anything and everything else in between to become a great player (not just shorstacker).

As a long time TAG shortstacker, I was very impressed by the accuracy of the preflop strategies that confirmed my own. I was enlightened by the loose yet profitable (more important than preflop) postflop strategies that will bring my game to a much higher level (and profit) than a former nit shovebot like myself. A great book overall, and I cannot wait for the second volume.

A step by step no hype strategy for making money in Poker.

This book is a simple and direct approach to getting someone playing winning poker. While the trend among the major poker publishers seems to be making poker books you can sit in a silk robe, drink wine, read and think deep thoughts until you have a headache to this book is something for the person not looking for endless hyperbole and simply wants to build a bankroll. The theories are touched on but most importantly they are applied , used, and presented in a way that will benefit a reader of all skill levels. I hope this book gets some solid success as I would hope the major publishers would make note and possibly look to bring books like this into the marketplace and not leave average poker fans in deep math and theory dust. I like the content of this book as well as the fact this book isnt about hype or false promises of making millions of dollars. This book is about grinding, working hard, and developing skills and winning mindsets and approaches to playing and studying this style of poker the author is teaching.

My only complaint is the copy the author sent was damaged in the mail but for what its worth I have 0 problem sending him another order as I am so pleased with his work and am more than happy to support him and his publisher!
