Updates from Third Edition

I have only read the first three chapters so far (on medicine rotation). I have not noticed any significant updates from the third edition. For example, IBD is not updated with biologic treatment options. The book adds a 100 new multiple choice questions, but that is all I have noticed so far.

The book claims a student committee and provided feedback to improve the 4th edition, but it does not provide any specifics. It might be worth it to hold onto third edition. I will update the review as I see changes.

As far as physical quality, pages feel cheaper than third edition.

I have now read about half the book and there are a few updated I have noticed.
1) They added a few lines about the new oral anticoagulants (i.e. apixaban)
2) BP guidelines have been updated with JNC 8

other mistakes have not been fixed like pneumonia severity index

Without a Doubt, This is a Gold!!

Internal medicine is THE foundation of 3rd year and beyond in medical school. If you look into Uworld for step 2, 1350 out of 2250 questions (60.93%) are from medicine alone. Therefore, I can't emphasize enough the importance of mastering internal medicine.

I compare Step up to Medicine for internal medicine as I would compare first aid for step 1. The book has everything you need to know for internal medicine clerkship. I trouble I had in 3rd year is finding the right resource. Some resources have way too much information not needed for 3rd year level (ex - uptodate), some have not enough (ex - case files book). If you rely only on your patient to teach you medical knowledge, it will largely be insufficient as you won't see patient with multiple diseases (you might never have a patient with rickets, AML, a-fib etc). This book in contrast has everything you need to know for internal medicine clerkship.

I love this book as much as I loved first aid for step 1. Here are the pros:
- Information is presented in concise form but is complete. If you opt out for case files or other smaller books, you might miss out on important information you need to know.
- It doesn't have unnecessary stuff you don't need at 3rd year. Ex - drug doses.
- The book is in color which makes reading fun.
- It has empty border in left and right so you can annotate the book
- There are "quick hit" and "clinical pearl" sections scattered throughout that are very high yield

If you are doing 8 wk traditional internal medicine clerkship, it will be hard to finish this book in that limited time. But give your best shot. Start studying this book a few weeks before you start your clerkship. It has 12 chapters total and 479 pages. If you can finish 1.5 chapter each wk, you will need exactly 8 wks to finish the book.

This book is GOLD.

If you have a good understanding of this book, all other clerkships will be easier. Being good in medicine helps you in all other clerkships.

Halfway through the text impression

Full of information, much more gained from reading this as compared to something like Master the Boards. Serving as a pretty good complement to the Kaplan review series for me. So far, haven't found any errors with up to date guidelines for diagnosis or therapy. Will update after completing the book. It probably goes without saying, but if you can't tolerate bullet point style text then this isn't for you.

So so good and funny, all ages can appreciate.

Our household didn't think this book would ever be released! My boys (12 & 8) loved the first one and could not wait for the second, it did not disappoint! My 12yo actually read it twice and giggled through it just as hard the second time! So, when can we expect book 3???? (please) My boys like it better than Big Nate even.

Funny, but ultimately disappointing

Niles and Miles are back. This ranking team, known as The Terrible Two, are ready for another year of pranking their school, especially their power-loving principal, Principal Barkin. Unfortunately, one of their pranks leads Principal Barkin to losing his job, and now he's been replaced with a much more stern principal, who is out to shut down all pranking.

I straight-up loved Book 1. It was so fun! I frequently recommend it to my 4th and 5th grade students who are looking for something funny to read, and so far they have all loved it. So my students and I were super excited for Book 2. The first third or so of The Terrible Two Gets Worse totally lived up to my expectations. I Laughed Out Loud on almost every page.

Unfortunately, I have to break the news to them that I didn't end up loving it, and that I'm not sure I'll get a copy for our classroom. Here's why -

The pranks in the first book were elaborate, creative, and harmless. There were awesome diagrams accompanying several, and the authors did a brilliant job of incorporating the cows of Yawnee Valley. The first book was outrageous, and that's why so many of us love it.

This second installment simply doesn't do the same things. The pranks are too typical, easy for kids to duplicate, and far from harmless. They put peppers in people's drinks, pull the fire alarm, and drop someone's pants. I've seen this book referred to by another reviewer as mean-spirited, and I totally agree. To make it worse, there are no cows! And no elaborate diagrams! Where is the creativity? Where is the outrageousness?

Overall, I'm hoping that this is just a Second Book Slump, and that the next installment will revive the potential of Book 1.

About the Author

Dru Lavigne has been using the Berkeley Software Distribution family of operating systems since the mid-1990s, and PC-BSD has been her primary desktop since 2006. A network and systems administrator and information technology instructor, she has over a decade of experience administering and teaching Netware, Microsoft, Cisco, Checkpoint, SCO, Solaris, Linux, and BSD systems. A prolific author, she is the author of BSD Hacks (O'Reilly, 2004) and The Best of FreeBSD Basics (Reed Media Services, 2007).

Dru is currently the editor-in-chief of the Open Source Business Resource, a free monthly publication covering open source and the commercialization of open source assets. She is founder and current chair of the BSD Certification Group, a non-profit organization with a mission to create the standard for certifying BSD system administrators. Perfect book for a novice.

This is a good book for anyone who is just starting out with PC-BSD. I can't say that it has much in the way of advanced topics, however, it does cover the basics and where to go when you want to take the PC-BSD OS to the next level. I especialy like the section on how to install Free BSD software in PC-BSD, that right there is worth the cover price.

Useful, broad information to install and use PC-PSD

Upgrade: after playing with, enhancing and expanding my new PC-BSD 9.0 system and delving repeatedly back into the Guide to PC-BSD, I have to admit it is more definitive than I initially claimed, it is in fact more helpful than many of my user level Linux references. I recommend this reference.

PC-BSD is a nice alternative to Linux, offering many of the same features and applications, and adheres to the same philosophy of Open Software (free). But it seems not as well established as Linux nor offers the the variety of distributions as the many mainstream Linux distros. Nonetheless, it's a rock-solid system, and the basis for some very useful offshoots in network and security applications.

Consequently, user level documentation is not as widespread or diverse. This text will get you up and running, and serve as a desktop reference, for PC-BSD, a graphical (GUI) desktop system. This book describes the KDE desktop manager (PC-BSD supports Gnome and others, not described), and describes BSD equivalents for package management, mail clients, browsers, and all those applications familiar in MS Windows and Linux. This text is not intended to document the more technical aspects such as BSD programming, server installations, kernel development and the like (even though the distribution install disk offers many of these capabilities).

This text is nicely written and presented in the usual manner (overview, install, customizing,..., tuning), providing a general and useful description of what you need to make PC-BSD run and make you happy. I did not find it to be definitive. I did find it to be on the pricey side for what it offers, as I find most of the other BSD references to be; I have no clue why, maybe I shop the wrong sites.

My PC-BSD distribution DVD (from OSDisc dot Com, recommended) came with the PC-BSD User Handbook, in PDF format. I found this to be as useful as the Definitive Guide, so you might want to give the Handbook a try first (247 pages). However, if you are an entry level user, or have no Linux background, the Definitive Guide is the way to go. There doesn't seem to be much else out there to choose from, so enjoy what there is.

(fwiw: my PC-BSD system runs Firefox, Thunderbird, OpenOffice, built-in firewall and virus software, and a host of Linux applications; I am presently happy with this system, its performance, and security features. Either this Definitive Guide or the Handbook will take you there.)

I'm still reading this book, but what I've read so far I like. Dru has made it easy to follow and understand. If anyone is interested in BSD Operating systems, they might try the PC-BSD, Free-BSD, or similar Operating System. Try this book on for size. I know the more I read the more I like. There's so much the PC-BSD will do, that in itself is enough to go for it. You might go online and download PC-BSD Operating System, commit it to disk, and have it for when you get the book: The Difinitive Guide to PC-BSD. Thanks.

About the Author
Shannon Lee Wolf is a caul bearer. Born in Virginia, her parents divorced when she was two years old, just before the birth of her younger brother who was also born with the caul. Her mother remarried two years later when living in her hometown in New Hampshire. Their growing family moved eight times in eleven years, finally settling in the Green Mountain State of Vermont. Shannon has one sister and four brothers. She attended high school in Montpelier then left for Massachusetts at age eighteen to attend the Swain School of Design where she majored in graphic design. She married and had one son who now abides in North Carolina and is pursuing a career as a DJ. She divorced her husband after seventeen years and moved back to Vermont, where she took two semesters at Vermont College, studying psychology. She then achieved her life coaching certification from Spencer Institute’s online course out of California. As a practicing life coach, she led a women’s self-awareness group and wrote online articles. After a major procedure applied by her acupuncturist, Shannon was suddenly overwhelmed with images and a story – and she began to write her first piece of fiction. She finished and indie-published this piece, entitled "Dover Graye" in the spring of 2009. In 2012 she began revising and expanding Dover Graye and entitling it "Rhapsody for Dover Graye – The Boy Born of the Caul". Shannon now lives with her life partner and continues to write. She has also dedicated her life to the cause of caul bearers across the world, founding "Caul Bearers United - Lifting the Veil". She seeks to educate the general public on what the caul represents as well as lending a support system for caul bearers and their families. While Shannon suffers from the disabling affects of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia, she continues to write. Her upcoming project is a book of short stories. All I could think of was "That's me!"

"Beyond the Veil arrived at my home and I started reading and all I could think of"That's me!" Am almost 3/4 of the way through the book. It was well after 2 A.M. that I finally laid it down so I could get some sleep. It was so hard to put it down.

It felt like I was coming home, finding my lost family, and understanding what was written without having to think about it! What a book! Thank you so much for writing it, only wish it were longer as it is so good."

This book is not only an essential guide for the caul bearer but the authors wisdom is for all peoples , tribes and religions . It's a book I found to be chillingly accurate in describing my life as a bearer of the caul. A book dedicated to helping those of us who feel so alone and alienated from the rest of the wold . It's a beautiful guiding light in a world full of darkness. I look forward to all books that this author may publish in the future.

Being a call bearer

This book is amazing. I couldn't put it down and it is the first book I have finished completely in a very long time. The author presents details about questions and mysteries you are desperately searching for the answers to. So many of those answers are in this book. I can't get over how my deep longing for such answers quickly subsided from page one. This is a must read for any caul bearer and anyone suspecting of being or knowing a caul bearer.
