About the Author
Kieren Diment is a social researcher in the School of Management and Marketing, University of Wollongong, Australia, where he uses Catalyst for the collection analysis and presentation of research data. Good and Useful Book

Mercurial is a really nice, portable, easy to use [which is saying a lot!] source code control system. This is the only paper book available for it. Fortunately, the book very well written, well organized, and nicely developed. The examples actually work and are simple enough, small enough, and complete enough to be useful to type in and work with while reading the book. They make reading the book more of an interactive exercise.

One of the other reviewers gave this book a 2 star rating because there is an incomplete section which sailed past review. He/she doesn't understand the nature of Open Source software development: The book is on line (see below), so if you see something you don't like - don't complain, fix it and share the fix! Ignore that review.

About Mercurial itself: it is the easiest source code control - aka version control, content control, etc - system I've ever used. I started using source code control back with a DOS clone of SCCS, found RCS and switched to that because it was really simple to use [although difficult to organize]. Have also tried CVS and SVN, but kept going back to RCS because of the administrative burden the bigger and better versions impose.

Mercurial makes source code control easy again. Creating and maintaining repositories is inexpensive and easy. Rather than having central repository to maintain and configure, you just type 'hg init; hg add . ; hg ci -m initial-checkin' and you have a brand new repository for whatever project is living in your current directory. To try out something without mangling the basic code, 'cd newdirectory; hg clone repository-directory' and you are now in a clone of the original repository and can hack away. If you like the experiment, you 'hg ci -m like-it; hg push' and it goes back to the main source; if you don't, just delete your trial repository. Rinse and repeat often. It actually makes source code controlled development easy.

So far I haven't found anything in Mercurial I don't like.

Repository vs. repository

I learned how to use Mercurial from this book. My only beef is the confusing use of the term "repository" in this book. Sometimes it's used to mean the .hg metadata directory, sometimes it means the whole directory of your project, which includes the .hg directory. It would have been less confusing to just use the term ".hg directory" when talking about the .hg directory! Maybe it's a Mercurial thing.

I discovered the online document "Understanding Mercurial" that uses the following 3 terms in a consistent manner: the repo, the working directory, and the store. This consistent use of terminology really helps clearing up the picture. I wish this book could have adopted such consistent use of the terms.

This book is aggravating! It contains lots of detailed information but sloppy writing makes the material, which is already confusing enough and requires meticulous choice of words to describe the concepts, really harder to understand. For example, the author casually says "a revision of the manifest", implying there can be multiple versions of the manifest, instead of "a revision in the manifest" or even "a revision recorded in the manifest".

Solid effort

One of the strong points about Mercurial is that you don't need a book like this to get started. But you'll want it anyway; there are subtleties to using Mercurial that you're not likely to figure out without some help. The author also makes a compelling argument for distributed source control in general, and Mercurial in particular. If you're trying to make a decision about choosing a source control system, you make well find his argument persuasive; I did.

About the Author
The author, catherine yronwode, is the proprietor of the Lucky Mojo Curio Company, a manufactory for traditional herb-based spiritual supplies. A former staff editor for Organic Gardening Magazine, she has written extensively on subjects as diverse as gardening, home crafts, antiques and collectibles, comic books, rural music, and other aspects of popular culture. She lives in Northern California with her husband, a dog, cats, and chickens.

Herbs and Roots, along with a select few mineral and animal curios, are the most important elements in traditional hoodoo. They are used as the basis for all manner of oils, powders, incenses, washes, perfumes, mojo hands, doll-babies, spell bottles, and tricks laid down to be walked over — and for this reason, Southern conjures are called "root doctors" and when folks jinx their enemies they "put roots on them." In fact, "rootwork" is a synonym for hoodoo in much of the country.

This alphabetical list of botanical, mineral, and animal hoodoo curios has been compiled from many sources, both oral and written. The information about modes of use is drawn primarily from the African-American tradition of the American South, but it can be employed by anyone working in a tradition of natural magic, no matter what their ethnic background.

The Best Book on Hoodoo Herbalism to Date. A+++++++

I really love this book, and found it so helpful, it is rare that you will find a book with so much information on the usage of herbs as done in the Hoodoo Magical system. This is the first book of its kind, dealing directly with the botanical usage within African-American Folk Magic. This book is packed with about 750 useful potions, spells, baths, and powders that the reader can start to learn Wright away. The 500 herbs, roots and minerals used in this book are so helpful, even for those who practice Santeria, and Voodoo, and even the Witch or Herbalist with European background will find this very useful. No where will you find a collection of magical herbs such as this. Herbs mentioned are, Adam and Eves roots, Devil's Shoestring, Bloodroot, Devil Pod, and this book goes on and on. I was really excited about this book, and it has not let me down. My favorite sections and what really caught my eye on these books are the 6 very helpful charts that cover everything from love drawing, to protection, and conjurations. Also the 50 black and white illustrations are also really good.
This book also covers the preparation of famous Voodoo and Santeria oil dressings, bath crystals, incenses, floor washes, cleansing and spiritual baths and the preparation of mojo bags.
I have to highly commend Catherine Yronwode, for such an important book, which in my opinion is a modern classic in the usage of herbal magic. This book belongs in every rootworker, witch, santero, and shamans private collection. I highly recommend this book, and wish I could give it more stars.

I'd give it 10 stars if I could

An earlier reviewer seems to think Ms. Yronwode limited her researches solely to Harry Middleton Hyatt's five volumes, and therefore awarded her only three stars instead of the five she should have been given. I am pleased to say that that reviewer is profoundly mistaken.
Catherine Yronwode, the author, is a woman of frighteningly enormous intelligence. She has studied hoodoo for at least 35 years now in both its historical and current forms. She is profoundly well read in rootwork (and I should add that she's studied it at levels a very rare few magic users of any system ever achieve.)However, the important fact that that earlier reviewer is obviously ignorant of is that Ms. Yronwode has made it a lifelong habit of learning from actual practitioners of the system. She continues to be deeply fascinated by the living, changing art of rootwork and, as she runs her own spiritual supply shop, she has ample opportunity to compare notes with her rootworking clients. It is important to note that she has told me that the majority of her clients are Black, and if that isn't a recommendation then nothing is. Both she and her clients learn from each other continuously. She has an impressive collection of rootwork artifacts spanning most, if not all, of the last hundred years.
This expertise and thoroughness carry over to the book. The book is an encyclopedia of hoodoo herbs, roots, and related items such as lodestones, Florida water, black cat bones, and blueing. The herbs, roots, and animal and insects have their scientific names given so that no confusion can be made. Each entry contains a thorough description of how the item in question is used, and usually gives actual directions for magical use, very often in several different ways. Entries also have important notes (when applicable) such as whether the item is an endangered species, or is toxic or not. No sloppily researched, half invented, slapped together Llewellyn title, this.
This scholarly work is the absolutely genuine article written by an authority in the field with decades of experience. If you're serious about the study of hoodoo this book is a *must*.

Great, but not easy to use

This is a great book, but can be a pain to find what you're looking for easily. Want a love oil? You'd better be prepared to flip to each magic herb or ingredient with that property and hope it's under one of them. I had to resort to writing an index in the back cover. I now use it mainly as a secondary research book because of it's incovenience. Much of the great spells or recipes simply get lost in the book.

About the Author

Paul Baines is Reader in Marketing and Director, MSc Strategic Marketing at Cranfield School of Management, Cranfield University. He is an international authority in the field of political marketing and Managing Editor, Europe, for the Journal of Political Marketing. He has published widely in journals and books on marketing topics including on public relations, public opinion, market segmentation and positioning, marketing research and strategic marketing. Paul runs his own strategic marketing and research consultancy, Baines Associates, which has undertaken work for a number of large and medium sized organisations including government departments, national charities and private sector organisations. In this spare time, he likes to swim, travel and devour current affairs magazines.


Chris Fill is a Director of Fillassociates. The company develops resources relating to marketing, communications, advertising and corporate reputation. Formerly a Principal Lecturer at the University of Portsmouth, Chris now works with a variety of organisations. He is a Visiting Professor at the Grenoble Graduate School of Business and a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Marketing where he was the Senior Examiner responsible for designing, writing and managing the Professional Diploma in Marketing Communications and subsequently the Professional Postgraduate Diploma module, Managing Corporate Reputation. In addition to numerous papers published in a range of academic journals, he has authored several books, including his internationally recognised text Marketing Communications, soon to be published in its sixth edition. He has just published Essentials of Marketing Communications, and Corporate Reputation, and Business Marketing

Kelly is a researcher, writer and speaker, and works in partnership with organizations exploring situated digital and social media learning and practices in organizational communications and developing case and strategic insights for digital participation. Kelly has a PhD on Web Knowledge(UNSW), is Associate Editor of Journal of Consumer Behaviour and authority on Digital Marketing for the 3rd Wiley Encyclopedia of Management. Her work is published in Psychology and Marketing, Behaviour and Information Technology, International Journal of Retailing and Distribution Management, Consumer Behaviour, and is co-author of Marketing. She won Best Paper in Interactive Marketing at the 2010 AM Conference for her work on 'The Web Makes Youth Feel', presented at the 2011 TedxCardiff on 'Rediscovering Friendship', and is member of the Academy of Marketing Research Committee (AMRC). Kelly is a lecturer in Digital Media Marketing at Cardiff University and a visiting fellow at Cranfield School of Management

Good For Keeping Math Majors Up To Speed

I bought this for my math major son to mess with during his time away from school. He (and a couple of friends) zipped through the first half of the book but are now grinding their way through the second half with all the enthusiasm that only three math geeks can summon. I highly recommend it, at least as a gift to keep the skills sharp during the holidays.

Thoroughly Compelling

In recent years, I have been influenced by several prominent and capable monist scholars. I considered their work exemplary and seriously considered the possibility of monism being true. When I discussed the topic with my childhood pastor, a theologian of high-caliber, he highly recommended this book to me. He told me that it had firmly established and settled for him that dualism (that is holistic dualism) is the strongest anthropological position from the Biblical data. I took his recommendation seriously. Yet I still started the book with trepidation, half expecting a polemic with shaky argumentation. Initially I found the introductory tone of his book to be a bit of an eye-roller. Nevertheless, I soon realized and came to respect the fact that the author had no intention of hiding behind the vain illusion of objectivity. He firmly believes in holistic dualism, argues from his presuppositional framework, and has no qualms doing so. The fact that he finds dualism under attack (which it certainly is) and in need of quality defense is ultimately noble of him. However, where some would fall prey to subjective blinders under such presuppositional conditions, Mr. Cooper does the exact opposite and argues his position with theological and philosophical precision. As I delved further into the book, I found that he precisely addressed many of my objections to dualism and gave very compelling Scriptural and philosophical answers.

The quality I most appreciated in this book was Mr. Cooper’s articulation of a dualism that is free from the errors of Platonic and Cartesian influence; a dualism that is Biblical and not pagan in origin; a dualism that is holistic and not dichotomous. Initially Mr. Cooper appears to side more with a Thomistic anthropology of the soul, which holds to the Aristotelian idea of the soul being the body’s form. However, speculations of Thomism aside, he argues that the Bible, by logical inference, minimally presents a substantival soul, intricately combined with the body, that is able to consciously survive the death of the physical body, and though not immortal (inherently impervious to destruction) it is nonetheless upheld by God in the intermediate state until the resurrection. Such a soul is weak and lethargic without the body, needing the body for fullness of life. Essentially, without God upholding its continued existence, and without an eventual reunion with the body, it would, like an artificially maintained organ, eventually run out of energy and cease to function. Such a soul squares plainly with the revelatory witness of Scripture and is compatible with both traditionalist and conditionalist eschatology of man’s final state.

One other quality I appreciated in Mr. Cooper’s work was his coverage of the scientific literature concerning the physiology and psychology of the brain. The simple truth that brain states generate mental states does not preclude the fact that mental states often and equally generate brain states. Scientists acknowledge and struggle with the fact that the causation of brain states is not always physiological, but often immaterially psychological. Thus, holistic dualism is a valid interpretation, which posits the existence of a substantival, psychological soul that affects the brain and is affected by the brain. They are intricately linked. There are well-known, respected scientists who agree that a soul of a separate (yet heretofore undiscovered) substance from the brain is a valid solution to psychophysiological interactionism. So while monists often charge dualism with being unscientific, to the contrary holistic dualism is able to enter the scientific arena and posit a solution that validly interprets the data.

In the end, this book has done exactly for me what my childhood pastor said it did for him: I am firmly settled. Furthermore, I greatly appreciate that Mr. Cooper has given me an anthropological framework that enables me to remain orthodox while remaining confident in its scientific and philosophical veracity. Well done Mr. Cooper!

Holistic Dualism Now and Forever

Cooper defends what he states has been the major view throughout church history: holistic dualism. By that term he means that human nature is of one substance with two primary modes of existence: body and soul inseparable in this life and the next. Cooper sees all other views of the nature of human nature as lacking biblical, theological, and historical support.

His study of Hebrews anthropological terms, while interesting, diminishes the conclusions of the classic work by H. W. Wolff. Though Wolfe would agree that there is great semantic overlap among the various terms, he expertly explains that the terms do have a semantic emphasis, and that we can develop a biblical anthropology from those terms. When all is said and done, Wolff's view might be called "Holistic polychotomy"--human nature is one nature with many functions, summarized as relational, rational, volitional, emotional, and physical.

An indelicate stomp through muddy waters

This book wasn't quite what I expected. What I thought it would be is a thorough survey of Biblical anthropology--that is, human nature as presented in the Bible--and a philosophically-minded hermeneutics thereof to extract some data with respect to the mind/body and monism/dualism question. And it is that, sort of. But a more complete description of what it is is an opinionated quasi-screed against monism as the philosophical Zeitgeist of our age. The author has an agenda, and he minces no words furthering it. The thing is, this kind of book is just the thing that could always stand more word-mincing, so to speak. I have no problem with the author having an opinion on his chosen subject and being open about it, it's just that the tone of his particular approach comes out sounding to this reader like at least two parts rhetoric for every one part argumentation.

To begin the book, we're harangued repeatedly with the reminder that if traditional dualism is false, then almost all of Christendom has believed a fundamental falsehood about human nature. Then, the traditional dualist view is presented as under attack from all fronts in Christian scholarship and direly needing defending. This dichotomy sort of sets the tone for the rest of the book.

The OT portion of the book mainly analyzes the various uses of the Hebrew words "ruach" and "nephesh," especially with respect to Sheol. I found all this thoroughly confusing, but Cooper, from somewhere, pulls the conclusion that the data _in toto_ support his own "holistic dualist" view. Then there's a lot of space given to analyzing such language in the intertestamental Apocrypha, and I just did not find this of much interest, these works being noncanonical in the Protestant church. There are all *kinds* of loopy stuff in the Apocrypha, and I really did not understand the point of trying to extract a coherent anthropology from it all. In total, the emphasis of this first 40% or so of the book seemed to be on "What various people through the ages have believed" rather than "What the Bible teaches or assumes". That's kind of disappointing.

Around the middle of the book, where the NT is discussed, a serious and identifiable problem emerges in Cooper's methodology: he sets up a trichotomy between dualism, and, with respect to the resurrection, "extinction-recreationism" and "immediate resurrectionism." Now, "immediate resurrectionism" seems all but untenable Biblically, yet the author spends a lot of time debunking it next to dualism. So all that just comes off as so much straw-man-beating. The deeper and purely philosophical problem with this approach is in Cooper's other straw man, "extinction-recreationism." He simply equates death with nonexistence, and this is a thesis that needs argument, not assumption. In fact, it seems to practically beg the question in favor of his own position.

To me, the mere future fact of the general resurrection just prima facie points to an anthropology of human persons as essentially material beings, to where there needs to be an independent reason shown for thinking that we're consciously disembodied in the interim before being reunited with our bodies: otherwise, it just seems blatantly arbitrary that there should be a resurrection. Cooper does not address this issue by giving reasons for thinking of ourselves this way, but rather simply demolishes some suspiciously gerrymandered-looking strawmen, leaving his own view as the sole remaining competitor. He does say against "extinction-recreation" that if a person is to be re-created, it is logically possible for duplicates of the person to be re-created, and hence there is a fundamental problem with reinstantiation of the original identity rather than duplication of the originally-born person. Here, at last, is an interesting philosophical argument (although not quite a persuasive one, seeing as how it leans on purely "logical possibility," which I'm inclined to be maximally skeptical about--it's "logically possible" I could wake up tomorrow morning as a centipede, but I'm also quite sure it's 100% metaphysically impossible, and hence impossible _tout court_, that I will, or could); unfortunately, it's about the only one in the book I could detect.

At the end of the book, I am still not sure what "holistic dualism" is and how to picture it conceptually. What it does smack of is giving a name to a sort of mathematical mean of all different positions and thereby trying to get the best of all worlds, rather than presenting a unified, explanatory, and independently desirable picture of human nature.

Up to now it probably sounds like I almost hated the book, yet I gave it three stars. Really, I'm being more cranky than I should (largely because it's late and I'm tired); _Body, Soul, and Life Everlasting_ is not totally unhelpful. Although lots of ink is spilled jostling ham-fistedly with strawmen or otherwise being awfully contentious, Cooper is quite conversant with the scholarly Biblical literature, although somewhat less so with the contemporary philosophical literature. The book does give a broad survey of views on the topic; it's just that I found the author's approach far more irksome than winning.
