About the Author

ROLAND BARTHES was born in 1915. A French literary theorist, philosopher, and critic, he influenced the development of schools of theory, including structuralism, semiotics, existentialism, social theory, Marxism, and post-structuralism. He died in 1980.

Difficult but well worth it

I got this book for an Art History class (History of Photography). I gave myself exactly one week to read this book. It wasn't enough time; this book is incredibly complex for Undergraduate reading. I had to reread the book several times, but thanks to my teacher, TA and fellow students, we managed to break it down and begin actually seeing what Barthes is saying. He wrote this book as an essay not necessarily to teach but more so to explain why he was attracted to photos more than others while looking for his perfect photo of his recently deceased mother. The first part of the book breaks down and explains the different parts of photography. The most important term to remember is punctum (and studium which goes with it) and enimos, or essence. The Second part breaks down his discovery of the Winter Garden photo (which is never seen in the book) and why he is attracted to it, or other words, he uses the terms from Part One to explain the photo.

As a student I highly dislike this book because of its difficult reading, but as an Art Historian, I find it incredibly useful, especially for any students planning on going into Contemporary art, which is highly dominated by the field of photography.

Great for a photographers collection, but not for all

Quite an interesting documentary of photography by Barthes. I think books like this, and Sontag, are interesting to read as they help us gain perspectives from photography from various approaches. This is simply a nice book to read that happens to reflect on what gifts/memories that images catch and leave behind for society to come.

It is philosophical in the sense that is questions what images do, but again a nice story in that it moves from image to image discussing them. Images of places that make you want to live there, images of people and how these images capture the essence of time, culture, and the gift of being alive.

It's a great read, for me, as a photographer going to my shelf wanting something to read on photography other than about apertures and technical underpinnings. Of course they are related, and unarguably necessary, for good photography - but like Sontag you experience some of the hidden games of photography.

For the deep thinking photographers out there, and admittedly not for all.

A pivotal text in the discourse.

One of the most important books on experience, society, and culture, written in the 20th century. The reflection is on photography, but involves aspects from phenomenology, deconstruction, and critical theory. This book should be read by all, not just artist or art historians. There is a massive amount of information in these short passages that read more as a dialog than a formal text. It is often so accessible that it is taking in passing without a thorough engagement.

Book = Biblical History (i.e. World created 4004BC)

Just want to make sure prospective buyers are aware that this book takes a strict Biblical perspective and starts world history at 4004 BC. If you are ok with that, then this book does a good job of graphically presenting events from that point forward. However, if you take the view that the world is 4 billion years old and that human evolution pre-dates 4004 BC (not to mention the evolution of other current and extinct species), then you probably want to look for a different book.

I love this charming Victorian timeline (updated).

I love this charming timeline of world history. All of my kids loved it as well.

Be aware that it is rooted in the Victorian era, so it is oriented around the "great man" theory of history. It's also not a serious academic resource for what was going on in Africa or the middle east over the centuries.

There are other timelines more in sync with today's approaches, but probably not one this charming. I can see cutting the long stiff paper out of the book and using it as a border in a child's bedroom.

This book is in the cataagory of my prized knowledge tools. To be able to view the easy to read chart and visualize what has happened around the globe at any given time frame is priceless. I am indebted to the many people who invested many hours to assemble this information. It has increased my desire for understanding about history.

Many of the photographs were taken at the actual locations in the Deer Creek country of northern California where Ishi was born and lived for nearly half a century as a "wild" Indian. Ishi stumbled into the twentieth century on the morning of August 29, 1911, when, desperate with hunger and with terror of the white murderers of his family, he was found in the corral of a slaughterhouse near Oroville, California. Finally identified as an Indian by an anthropologist, Ishi was brought to San Francisco by Professor T. T. Waterman and lived there the rest of his life under the care and protection of Alfred Kroeber and the staff of the University of California's Museum of Anthropology.

Lewis Gannett was a critic for the New York Herald-Tribune.

Meet the Monster....and He is Us

It isn't too common for me to start crying by the ending of a book. But this story brought me to tears. I really came to admire this reticent and dignified man, and the people who befriended him, and it saddens me to think of all the other people like Ishi who were mercilessly slaughtered. Ishi is really a representative of that hunted and slaughtered class, a class that existed right here on this California soil, and a slaughter which was perpetrated by people I thought I admired: the good old cowboy types.

This is a story of epic character (Ishi's) and epic cruelty. Please do not misunderstand me: this is not a book which has any intent of guilt-tripping anyone. But it did take me by surprise, because you can talk about slavery all day long, or the Nazis, and I feel no relation, no nexus between myself and those crimes. But, here, I felt a little weird. The degenerate conduct is very close to home, literally and figuratively. I had cowboy guns and chaps as a kid, and I pretended to shoot Indians. And that is a really pathetic thing to pretend, because Ishi was an Indian, and I've learned he was just like you and me. He and his people were rational and empathetic. There had to have been a more humane way to co-exist.

"The true ghastliness of these events is that they were carried out not by alien monsters but by people shockingly like you and me."--Karl Kroeber in the Foreword to the book written by his mother. That's exactly right. This book describes how Ishi's family and tribe was basically hunted down and exterminated right in front of his eyes as a child, in at least two major massacres and a few other lesser atrocious moments. It breaks your heart. I always thought the Indians scalped the settlers. In this book, it is the local sheriff and his gang of quasi-criminals that is scalping the Indians, including their children, in retaliation for a theft of some beans or the killing of a cow, or some other handy excuse. "No state in the Union surpassed the Golden State in systematically and shamelessly harassing, murdering, and stealing from its native inhabitants." Since I live in California, this strikes a painful chord as well. The data cited by Ms. Kroeber is compelling and I suspect unrefuted. The conduct she describes is well documented and uncontested. These Indian peoples were treated like vermin, just a little over a hundred years ago, right where your wine grapes are now growing, or nearby.

I'm perhaps unduly emphasizing negative themes. I just learned of these events, or perhaps I should say I just finally comprehended them while reading the book. They struck me out of the blue. This education about nearby and recent enormous cruelties is just a part of the reading experience, however, and isolating these events does this fantastic story no favor, and I apologize. Rest assured, this is a life-altering book, and I've mentioned only the part which shocked me in a negative way.

Ishi the man is a wonderful character, he is warmly introduced and developed here, and I can think of no character, real or fiction, which I came to care about more than Ishi. He was capable, strong, polite, free from bitterness, totally alone. His champions and protectors, Professors Kroeber and Waterman, and Dr. Popey, I came to admire and respect and envy. I loved the depictions of wild nature, and Ishi's ability to make handicrafts, a skill-set described in fabulous detail by Mrs. Kroeber. You may want to make an arrowhead or a bow based on her description. Ishi recommends Mountain Juniper for your bow-making, so heed his advice, he was master.

The writing is first-rate. Mrs. Kroeber was herself a scientist, and her book takes an artful but methodical approach to the events--both tragic and hilarious-- it describes: the way of the Indians; the way of the Yana (Ishi's tribe); the experiences Ishi endured during his hard life in the wild; the discovery of Ishi; the revelations from Ishi; the "camping trip" with Ishi in his old home territory (and his anxiousness to return to the city: he learned to love beds, toilets, stoves, towels, and the other "clever" inventions of the white man); and Ishi's demise from tuberculosis.

I am one of those people who marks up a book as I read it. My copy had virtually every page marked up by the end. This book is so thought-provoking and idea-rich on so many levels it will take me years to fully asimilate it.

One of the newspaper reviewers is quoted on the cover: "A book every American ought to read." True. And, I suspect, every American will be deeply enriched and rewarded for the effort. But the ending is still sad, when you think of what Ishi endured and how little time he had in his hard, hard life to enjoy things. I kept imagining the things I would show Ishi if I had the chance: Disneyland; a Rolling Stones concert; a Benny Hill video, lasagna, a motorcycle ride.

He only spoke about 600 English words by the end, but you will understand him very well. And, I'm confident, he will be someone you deeply respect.

This is an excellent and significant book. I have replaced it a couple of times over the years, because it doesn't always come back when lent out. This particular hardbound edition from U of California Press 1976 is the best I have owned with many more and sharper photos and at over 7x10 inches a well designed layout.
As for the context - well, this is the real life story of when the Stone Age meets the sharp edge of the Industrial Age and all the tragedy mass humanity can bring upon the land. It is also the true story of how knowledge and our better character can bridge those worlds... You won't regret this read, it stays with you.

An anthropologist on Mars

At the beginning of the 20th century a half-starved 50-year-old Indian was found in a remote farm in California. He was the last surving Yaki Indian. Before the arrival of white settlers there had been probably more than 2000 Indians of that tribe in the area. They were wiped out in less than 80 years by the diseases carried by europeans, the reduction of their natural environment and periodical retaliatory expeditions organized by band of vigilantes to revenge a stolen cow or horse or the killing of one white settler. The last surviving Yaki was lucky enough to be "adopted" by the curators of the Museum of Berkeley University. There the Indian lived happily for 5 years, working as janitor and a sort of living exhibit. The anthropologist studied him and his world, and he studied the world of whites, showing a remarkable degree of adaptability to modern American society. He was called Ishi (=man) by the staff of the museum because he always refused to say his own name. Loved by everybody and friend of everybody, he died of the tubercolosis that his natural defence did not recognize. The story was written 50 years after his death by the daughter of the museum's director through the notes of her father (she had never met Ishi). Even being a perfectly scientific book, it has the power of moving of a novel and contains a terrible caveat for the modern man.

Ready or Not ???

Sasha Ravae what is one thing someone can say about her? Excellent writer! Since I found out about her work through a group on Facebook, I have not been disappointed. I can truly she is one of the few authors whose work can take me out of my element emotionally. Like her other books, her selection of word choice in this book can have the reader visualize that they are within the story. However, I did notice more grammar/spelling/spacing issues than the others I have read but not enough that it would distract from the book as a whole.

Los(Mr. Manipulator): I could tell from the beginning how he was going to be. He is too calm and collected to not know what he was going to do, but he can fool others well mainly one person who holds the key into what he wanted from the beginning. I wonder how things are going to turn since an admission has been made. Honestly, I need him to go ASAP, just based off his attitude. I just don't like shady people and he is the definition of shady.

Renee(Ms. Envious or Nah?): Although she acts like the typical envious other woman, something doesn't sit right with me about her. It feels like it is more to her anger than just being jealous. I'm curious to see how this plays out and what her role is in the end. I am guessing that the role is going to be bigger than expected...

Yari(Ms. Clingy/Messy): She is just all over the place that can only lead to drama. She craves attention, and when she doesn't get the attention, she resorts to some potential dangerous actions. I'm just not feeling the drama that I see coming with her. The door she has opened by association with certain people is only going to come back to bite her and even others in the end...

Trina(Ms. Pseudo Boss/Goddess): She truly "not about that life", but she sure pretends to be able to handle it. She wanted to step up like a boss, but one person can make her back down based on emotions. She surely didn't seem like she understood what she was getting into; it surely is not for the "weak" at heart or simple minded individuals. Her kryptonite came back, and that was all she wrote. Now that the truth has come out, I wonder if emotions will dissolve and she take care if the problem and face her the consequences of her naïve actions...

There needs to be a part two at some point to see if she lives up to the name "Diosa" or reverts to the broken individual that she hasn't moved on from being. I know, however, this turns out Author Sasha Ravae is going to give the unexpected just to keep readers (especially me) on edge...

Trap Dummy!!!

This was another really good story by Sasha Ravae. I have yet to be disappointed by anything she's written. This book was no different.

Trina. How can I describe her? Hmmmm. Well, for her to be a "boss" chick, she sure is dumb as hell. She talked too damn much. I mean really, what boss do you know who tells all their business to people outside of their business? Reko might have been right. She wasn't made out to be the boss. If you think about it, she really didn't earn the position. It was handed to her only because she was with Jonah at the time of the tragedy. She claimed to love him so much, but not even two months after he was murdered, she throws everything he stood for and represented, out the window. All because she bumps in to her first love, Los. All the back and forth she was doing in her head about whether she would give them another chance, kind of got on my nerves. B*tch, you knew you wanted to be back with Los from the very beginning. She betrayed all the people who actually looked out for her and surrounded herself with people who didn't give a damn about her. She's about to get a rude awakening now that he has showed his true colors. When this s*** hits the fan, she deserves everything RG does to her. I for one won't feel sorry for her. She's dumb as hell and doesn't deserve to be the boss. My gut tells me they already know about Los. They are just sitting back and waiting. She only proved what Renee was saying all along. It looks like she was only with Jonah for his money and to get over Los. Renee might have been right. Speaking of Renee. I peeped a few things out after I finished reading and all I'm gonna say is things don't add up with her. I mean, they add up but.... I'll just keep my thoughts to myself. LOL. I'm keeping my eye on Renee. I gave this book 4 ****s because it took a minute for things to pop off. The story line kept me interested but it took a minute for the drama to start. Also, I'm gonna be honest. I said this before but, Trina was just DUMB!

Sasha has done it once again another great read I knew this book was going to be great the title alone solid me...this book was set up perfect & I definatly wasn't expecting for Jonah to be kill so quick and my poor Ron I like him for some reason I just knew him & Trina would end up together but boy I sure was fooled...then there is Yari with her talkative self.. oh my that damn Los pissed me off at the end I knew he was up to something but DAMN marriage...sasha u gotta give me part two like ASAP I can't wait to read Trina response...hurry hurry pls I need my fix lol
