The blunt Agatha Raisin, with her stocky figure and "bearlike eyes," makes for an unusual sleuth, and her fifth outing (after Agatha Raisin and the Walkers of Dembley, 1995) certainly makes for an unusual adventure. The former public relations powerhouse who left London and a career for a simpler life in a Cotswold country village is about to marry her handsome next-door neighbor. But the wedding ceremony is halted mid-vow by the arrival of Jimmy Raisin, the husband Agatha fervently hoped was dead and has neglected to mention to James Lacey, the fastidious, upstanding citizen currently waiting to tie the knot. Even less convenient than a living husband who interrupts your wedding is one who, shortly thereafter, turns up dead in a ditch in the immediate neighborhood. Naturally, Agatha and James top the suspect list. But the dead Jimmy was a down-and-out alcoholic who had been known to practice a bit of blackmail. Agatha and James track down some of his victims, who have a distressing tendency to die shortly after being questioned by the two. With bodies stacking up and James refusing to marry Agatha (even though she has already sold her cottage), the atmosphere becomes nicely tense. Beaton, who also pens the Hamish MacBeth series, gleefully creates one excruciating situation after another for her indomitable heroine to endure.

In the seventh entry in this cozy mystery series, former public-relations woman now Cotswold resident Agatha Raisin is about to be married to her next-door neighbor, James Lacey. Then Agatha's long-absent but undivorced husband turns up. That night he turns up dead. Although Agatha and James agree the marriage is off, they decide to team up, as they've done in the past, to solve the murder and clear themselves as suspects. One of the interesting things about this series is how unappealing the abrasive Agatha can be. She's vain, snide, and self-pitying on a regular basis. All that adds up to a heroine who is also very human, and perhaps that--we identify with her even if we don't always like her--is one of the elements that keeps readers coming back. Another is Beaton's plotting. Like snack food, it's fast, tasty, and leaves you satisfied, if only temporarily. That's all right, though. Beaton is quick; more Raisin should be along shortly. An enjoyable and easy read

This was such a fast reading easy read. There are multiple issues with the main character and 2 of her friends. Although Agatha Raisin is a series, you don't have to read previous books to know the relationship the characters have with each other. I've read almost all of the Agatha Raisin series and have enjoyed all of the books. The characters seem "human" with needs, desires, fears that seem normal.

Agatha Raisin is unique

I have enjoyed the character development in this series. It helps to read the Agatha Raisin books in sequence although it is not necessary to enjoy each story. Agatha and James are complex characters and M.C. Beaton does an excellent job in their delineation. The villagers in this cozy mystery are lovable and reading the book is like living in a small village.
The plot of this book was interesting and the action well-paced. I couldn't put the book down until I finished it. The relationship of James and Agatha has reached a different level in this story. Being middle-aged, independent and set in their ways, their feelings for each other are bound to be mixed. They are likable and you care what happens to them.

A valuable book for everyone who delivers or receives health care

It drives me nuts when health care professionals describe a medication as reducing the risk of some negative outcome by 50% without also explaining that the risk, to begin with, is only 1 out of 1000. And I'll never forget the doctor who looked at my medical records and told me I was unremarkable - without explaining that "unremarkable" is medical jargon meaning I was in good condition.

These two issues are among the hundreds that Helen Osborne addresses in her book. Osborne is a highly-experienced expert on communication in the health care field. While much of the book is targeted to health care providers, it's also a valuable resource for patients - or anyone who may someday become a patient. The book excels in describing the many factors that influence communication, such as age, culture, emotions, cognition, past experience, current limitations, and ethics.

You can read the book from A to Z, if that's your preferred approach. Or you can look up a topic of interest, such as Document Design, Interpreters and Translations, Listening and Speaking, Numeracy, Visuals, or any of the others, including several important chapters on Knowing Your Audience. My favorite way to read it is to open it up anywhere and read whatever is on that page, because everything in the book is practical what-to-do and how-to-do-it. And every single page offers advice that's worth paying attention to. In addition to strategies, ideas and suggestions, every chapter offers stories and examples and a list of related resources.

Although the focus of this book is health care, most of the wisdom in the book is relevant to communication in other contexts as well, such as communicating to customers and communicating to audiences. Indeed, everyone who cares about communicating so as to understand and be understood can benefit by reading this book.

Should be compulsory reading for all medical students and doctors !

Most doctors think they have a great bedside manner; and that they communicate well with their patients. However, the sad reality is that most patients find talking to doctors very frustrating. Doctors use a lot of jargon - and most are not good at explaining concepts such as risk and probability. Poor communication leads to unhappy patients - and increases the risk of being sued for doctors as well.

This is where health literacy comes in. It can bridge the gap between doctors and patients, so that both are on the same page.

Unfortunately , this is a topic with which most doctors are unfamiliar; as a result of which they fail to use simple tools which would help to improve doctor-patient communication.

This book provides a great solution to this ubiquitous problem. It's very well-written; easy to read; and chock-full of facts and information, which can be used daily in clinical practise.

I especially love the Stories from Practise which provide real life examples of how these tools can be used !

START with this book!

As Patient/Family Education Coordinator for our hospital I spent a over a year learning "piecemeal" what is offered in a nutshell in this book. It also gives detailed "Sources to Learn More" at the end of each chapter. No digging for additional info - it is right there at your fingertips. I wish I had had this book when I first started in this postion. It would have been helpful in steering me on a more efficient path. You can easily just choose a chapter to read, but I ended up reading it cover to cover. While this would make a great text book (and should be required for anyone responsible for communicating health information), it is presented in such a way that it is an enjoyable read.
