"This book should have wide appeal, from those who are just getting into the area and wish to learn mathematical foundations and applications to those who are already experienced and wish to have a reference that provides a mathematically rigorous coverage of the state of the art…The coverage is thorough but not overwhelming, perhaps because the chapters are divided into lessons, allowing the reader a chance to pause and think. The authors work clearly to impart an understanding of the theory and applications, and not just offer an encyclopedic tome."

An excellent text for Fourier Analysis

I bought this book hoping to find a self-contained, semi-rigorous introduction to Fourier Analysis and its applications, and indeed I'm very pleased with the purchase. One aspect of the book's format that I enjoyed in a self-study setting is how it is partitioned into lessons (which are in turn divided into chapters). Indeed, it seemed that each lesson took me about 60-90 minutes to absorb, which is the average time most students (including myself) devote to one lesson.
Another aspect of the book I enjoyed was the fact that, on one hand the author took the time to introduce mathematically sophisticated ideas such as Lesbesgue measure and Hilbert spaces in order to make the proofs run more smoothly, but on the other there where more practical lessons on the fast Fourier transform, filters, and even wavelet analysis (last lesson). Such a blend of theory and practice in a relatively compact text seems quite rare.
Finally, I highly recommend this book for students of all levels; but especially to graduate students in mathematics, physics, and engineering.

A Wonderful Book at A Time Where We All Need A Dose of Hope

These are times where we all need a dose of hope.
And this book delivers.
Each chapter in the book chronicles the moment in which visionaries from different backgrounds realized that they can use video games as a force for positive changes in their fields. Those who had those visions are far removed from the world of games and their backgrounds could not be more diverse. They include a former Supreme Court Judge, a Pediatric Oncologist, a Saudi Prince, and a Journalist. All created together a path of hope as they understood the engaging power of games. The book celebrates these visionaries and the moment they made power plays.

Feels less like "How can?" and more like "When will?" video games save the world.

Fantastic read chronicling the current games for change ecosystem. Each chapter walks through a different perspective showing how designs can (and do) influence the real world. The implications of the examples discussed are simultaneously inspiring and terrifying in regards to their potential impact. Subject matter is presented in a way that a novice could appreciate, but still offers enough insight for someone close to the scene to glean new insights. After reading, feels less like "How can?" and more like "When will?" video games save the world. Highly recommend for anyone wishing to know what the future hold and how video games can drive us there.

More Of The Best.

I had already purchased the other two volumes, and I have an original copy of this one. I wanted this "New Revised Edition" to compare to the original and to have a matched set of all three. This edition really is revised, with new photos and new descriptions, and it maintains the magnificent standard set by Mr. Burt, with more attention to detail and history than any other volumes on the subject. That, and the price is very good at the moment.

As far as I'm concerned, this is the definitve work on the subject.

Essential reference.

This volume and the two that follow it are among the most important ever published on British battleships (and battle cruisers and even a few carriers made from battleships). Earlier editions are very expensive if you can find one. Well-researched and written, the photographs will grab your initial attention--large and clear, and many not published before. You can almost hear the waves--and guns. Along with the photos are excellent profile diagrams of changing ship types and their growing size. A brief color section illustrates changing ship colors from the Victorian to Edwardian navy, and large color profiles on the endpapers further show how these vessels really looked in their prime. (If you have the original edition, there is not much change here . . . but if these books are not yet on your shelf, take advantage of their reasonable price now.)

An exceptional work.

I recently described two more books in this series by R. A. Burt as works you would want to own and this is no different. The extent of the detail given to every aspect of technical information really is most impressive.

By the mid 1880s the Royal Navy’s ability to conduct a modern war at sea was being openly questioned. The resultant Naval Defence Act of 1889 led to a programme of an astonishing 52 battleships being constructed over the next 22 years. With such a vast empire to police and protect, the Royal Navy always maintained a fleet of ships equal in size and disposition to the next two largest naval fleets in the world so that it would be equal to the task should any two of those fleets join forces in opposition. This programme of complete reconstruction, however, was only spoiled by the introduction of the new Dreadnought design which was as revolutionary to the future development of warships as the jet engine would become to aircraft many years later.

This book, however, deals with the pre-Dreadnought British battleships 1889-1904 and is such an exceptional work it stands mast and funnel above all other books in my own library. By repeating the chapter headings, one gets an idea of the scope of the vessels covered; Royal Sovereign class, Hood, Centurion and Barfleur, Renown, Majestic class, Canopus class, Formidable class, Bulwark class, Duncan class, Queen class, King Edward VII class, Swiftsure and Triumph, Lord Nelson class, Appearance and changes, Battleship Forts and Battleship Exterminators, Conclusion, Bibliography and finally, Index.

Personally, I came to the work through my own ongoing research into the loss of two Duncan class battleships and, in order to give the reader an idea of the immense value of the work, the following detail is explained just for this single class of battleship. Altogether 21 pages are devoted to the Duncan class. Commencing with Design, we find technical details (as intended) for HMS’ Duncan and Albermarle with a rare photo of the former in Victorian colours. Line drawings of profile and deck plan accompany another photo of HMS Russell with the text continuing to describe every element of these vessels. Armament is followed by a sequence of photographs showing HMS’ Cornwallis completing in 1904, Duncan and a closer view of the latter’s guns being replaced in Malta in 1909.

With the remainder of the section also accompanied by even more excellent historic photographs, we find; technical details (as completed); brief details of all 6 ships of the class by name, displacement, dimensions, armament, armour, machinery, ship’s boats, searchlights, anchors, wireless, complement and the cost of each vessel and guns. Various cutaway sections (profile and a number of cross sections) with each internal compartment numbered and explained. The vessels’ stability is followed by an in-depth appreciation of the Cornwallis’ steam trials of 1903 and the class collective steam trials. Appearance changes is followed by a potted history of each of the 6 individual ships of the class.

Commencing with HMS Duncan, we find a bullet list of events by date from ‘laid down’ to ‘towed to Dover for scrapping.’ HMS Montagu follows in similar format but with a particularly descriptive narrative relating to her grounding and eventual loss. HMS’ Cornwallis, Russell, Albermarle and Exmouth are then given their own similar treatment.

If this extensively detailed information relating to a single class of pre-Dreadnought battleship were then to be multiplied by the remaining classes found within this outstanding work, I would suggest most readers will find the answers to all the questions they may have.

Great book, important topic

It's my opinion that the Christian church has done a poor job of addressing sexuality. Lisa McMinn's book is a wonderful exception to that generality. She balances candor and compassion; is didactic but not judgmental. Her presentation is a good antidote for unhealthy views of sexuality that exist both inside and outside the Christian community.

Best book on Sexuality from a Christian perspective

It seems Christians treat sexuality as one of two extremes - to celebrate in marriage, or to ignore or repress in the unmarried. This book gives an excellent overview of how God created us male and female from birth, and that sexuality has a purpose - throughout life, not just in procreation. This book addresses sexuality as a longing for relationship - in every context of life. It addresses sexual development, singleness, marriage, childbearing, and our sex-driven culture. It was a refreshing read, well-researched, and well thought-out. I would definitely use this book when talking to young women (men also, but I mostly talk to women) about sexuality and sexual issues in today's world.
