About the Author

After a distinguished career as a social work educator and administrator, Dr. Cox currently teaches as an adjunct lecturer at La Trobe University in Australia. His professional interests have included work in social work and immigration and the experiences of refugees. He has written scores of articles and several books. He was awarded his Ph. D. from La Trobe in 1974.

Manohar Pawar, PhD, is professor of social work at the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Charles Sturt University (NSW, Australia) and is also the President of the Asia-Pacific branch of the International Consortium for Social Development. Earlier, he has taught at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai, and La Trobe University, Melbourne. He has more than 30 years of experience in social work education, research and practice in Australia and India.

Professor Pawar has received a number of awards, including the ICSSR Doctoral Fellowship located at the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies, New Delhi (1986–1988); the Citation Award for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning (2008, from the Australian Learning and Teaching Council); and Quality of Life Award (2001, from the Association of Commonwealth Universities).

His current areas of interest include international social work, development and social policy practice, social consequences of cli¬mate change and water, social work education, virtues and social work practice, informal care and ageing, NGOs and community devel¬opment. He is the lead chief investigator of research funded by the Australian Research Council’s Discovery Project that focuses on virtues and social work practice.

His publications include Social Work Practice Methods: Reflections on Thinking, Doing and Being (2015); Water and Social Policy (2014); International Social Work: Issues, Strategies and Programs (2013); The SAGE Handbook of International Social Work (2012); Social Development: Critical Themes and Perspectives (2010); and Community Development in Asia and the Pacific (2010).

A MUST HAVE FOR HEALTH

This book is a must have for anyone with ANY health issue. It is a whole foods diet that allows the highest availability of absorption in the body. Liquid foods are already predigested, allowing your body the highest available uptake of nutrients from the food eaten. Your body does not have to do the work, and is allowed the much needed break to heal. This book is well written in laymens terms and is easy for anyone to understand. The recipes are all pleasing too!

Farrokh K. Langdana

Dr. Farrokh Langdana is a professor in the Finance/Economics Department at Rutgers Business School (RBS), New Jersey. In addition to this volume, he is the author of four other books including the textbook, Macroeconomic Policy: Demystifying Monetary and Fiscal Policy, and numerous research articles. Dr. Langdana is currently the Director of the globally ranked Executive MBA program at RBS. He has taught Macroeconomic Policy and International Trade extensively at RBS and around the world. Dr. Langdana is the recipient of over thirty teaching and research awards including the Warren I. Susman Award for Excellence in Teaching (Rutgers University’s highest teaching award).

Peter T. Murphy

Peter T. Murphy is an operating partner with Dubilier & Company, and currently serves as President and C.E.O. of DC Safety, a leading supplier to the automotive industry. Mr. Murphy has been a leader and pioneer in international business for 25 years, operating in dozens of countries across Asia, Europe, and the Americas. His expertise in strategy and value creation is complemented by hands-on experience across a range of business disciplines. He is a graduate of Iona College and earned his MBA with a concentration in Finance from Rutgers Business School.

Farrokh K. Langdana

Dr. Farrokh Langdana is a professor in the Finance/Economics Department at Rutgers Business School, New Jersey. In addition to this volume, he is the author of three research-oriented books (two co-authored with Prof. Richard C.K. Burdekin), the textbook, Macroeconomic Policy: Demystifying Monetary and Fiscal Policy, now in its second edition, and several publications pertaining to macroeconomic policy and macro-experimentation.

Dr. Langdana is currently the Director of the globally ranked Executive MBA (EMBA) program at Rutgers Business School. He teaches Macroeconomic Policy as well as International Trade and Global Macroeconomics in the EMBA program as well as in the full-time and Flex MBA programs at Rutgers Business School.

In addition to being the recipient of the Warren I. Susman Award for Excellence in Teaching (Rutgers University’s highest teaching award), Prof. Langdana has also been awarded the Paul Nadler Award for Teaching Excellence, the Horace dePodwin Research Award, over ten Executive MBA Teaching Excellence Awards and over 20 Rutgers MBA teaching awards. In addition to teaching in the United States, Prof. Langdana has also taught Executive MBA students in China (Beijing and Shanghai), Singapore, France and in Iceland, and has lectured in India.

Peter T. Murphy

Peter T. Murphy is an operating partner with Dubilier & Company. He currently serves as President and C.E.O. of DC Safety, a leading supplier of safety products to the automotive industry. Mr. Murphy has 25 years of experience as a pioneer and leader in global business, establishing ventures and achieving growth in dozens of countries across Asia, Europe, and the Americas. Mr. Murphy’s expertise in business strategy is complemented by his hands-on experience in multiple disciplines including sales, operations, supply chain, finance, marketing, and technology. His industry experience, in addition to automotive, includes the packaging, apparel, medical equipment, and retail sectors.

Mr. Murphy received his Masters in Business Administration with a concentration in Finance from Rutgers Business School in 2010, and was awarded the Executive MBA Achievement Award for Highest Academic Achievement in the EMBA Program. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Humanities from Iona College in 2006. He has given lectures on international business and global trade to academic and business audiences in Asia and the United States, and has taught at the MBA level as an adjunct lecturer at Rutgers Business School. Inside the Engine Room

I had the opportunity to read the manuscript of this book while taking the lecture taught by the author during the last semester of my MBA program. It's a hard hitting book that provided me with an understanding of the classical trade theorem/policy and its real world implications without going through the savagery of complex mathematical equations. Through this book, Langdana & Murphy had succeeded in bringing human concerns back into the economic studies. .:REMBA13:.

A must-read for anyone interested in global business, policy and politics

A practical and insightful must-read for anyone genuinely interested in global business, policy, and politics. Langdana and Murphy dispel common misconceptions about products being "made-in-the-USA" - whether this is a fact and, more importantly, whether it should be a goal. They segue seemlessly from microeconomic principles about globalized firms and industries to a far-reaching macroeconomic analyses that spans countries, their capital flows and their exchange rate dynamics. The unique real-world "articles" in each chapter truly bring the theory to life. This book is a thoughtful and well-articulated explanation of issues that are integral to a thriving economy.

Excellent Introduction to Global Trade Issues

Langdana and Murphy have provided an excellent, detailed introduction to the topic of global trade, useful for advanced undergraduate or graduate courses in business and economics. Through excellent use of graphs and examples they present the compelling case that global trade is not a zero/sum game. Rather, the "pie gets bigger" for everyone as trade barriers are lifted. This text was used very successfully in the executive MBA program at Rutgers, and I would unhesitantly recommend it for use by others.

Dr. Rajas Deshpande has written extensively on facebook and otherwise. A book written by him about patients, medical teachers and doctors, and their complicated relationship has just been published by Partridge. ''The Doctor Gene –What everyone must know about doctors' is a collection of short essays, musings, memoirs amongst others. As all who know about him are aware, Dr. Rajas has been fighting for the causes of doctors and the book tells us just how passionately.
I have seen Rajas evolve as a meritorious scholar, a bumbling medical student, a brilliant doctor and an established neurologist. It is wonderful to think that the lanky kid would grow into a leader of MARD, at the forefront of agitation seeking better conditions for resident doctors. His passion for everything that he holds dear and his felicity with language combine to impart a unique flavor to his writing. In his hands, apparently simple but neglected topics become lofty themes.
The book talks of many things but is mostly about the medical profession and the resistance that some good doctors have to face to change things for the better. Medical practice is not only about the patient’s illness and its treatment. Expectations of patients and relatives from the doctors have increased as hopes for survival have been converted into demands for recovery in shortest possible time. Every patient or some relative knows other doctor than the one treating the patient. This leads to unwanted frustration. These and other problems faced by doctors, whose solutions are perpetually ignored, taking for granted what has been passed on for generations are dealt with at length by the author. The government’s acts and omissions, role of the judiciary and the media in medico-legal cases, ethics in medical professions etc. are some of the themes addressed.
The book is peppered with good stories. 'The Redeemed Devil', 'The Beauty and the Horror' stand out. I hope Rajas considers writing fiction too. As comments on his facebook page show, many are fans of his writing style, and the use of similes (“like a stern mother slapping the bum of her naughty child” deserves special mention in approval) point to a fertile mind.
Dr. Rajas Deshpande makes emphatic assertions, draws up convincing arguments and examples, and asks a lot of uncomfortable questions to himself, as we all should to ourselves. For as humans we owe it to our future generations. I wish this book its due reach: in my opinion everyone concerned with the health industry, especially the medical students who are our future doctors, and people in the media should read it.

I ordered this book is for a class i am taking. I can't say it is particularly enjoyable but it gets the job done. It does repeat information quite often in chapters which can be slightly annoying, but the real reason I am dissatisfied is because of the time it took to be delivered!
I ordered the book on a Tuesday, choosing 3-5 business day delivery, assuming the counting started from the day it was ordered. I didnt end up getting the book for 10 business days, and fell behind in my class because of it. Advice: don't order online!

Using several examples of such denial as test cases, they propose six key principles that may lead individuals to reject "accepted" health-related wisdom: the charismatic leader; fear of complexity; confirmation bias and the internet; fear of corporate and government conspiracies; causality and filling the ignorance gap; and the nature of risk prediction. The authors argue that the health sciences are especially vulnerable to our innate resistance to integrate new concepts with pre-existing beliefs. This psychological difficulty of incorporating new information is on the cutting edge of neuroscience research, as scientists continue to identify brain responses to new information that reveal deep-seated, innate discomfort with changing our minds.

Denying to the Grave explores risk theory and how people make decisions about what is best for them and their loved ones, in an effort to better understand how people think when faced with significant health decisions. This book points the way to a new and important understanding of how science should be conveyed to the public in order to save lives with existing knowledge and technology.

About the Author

Sara Gorman, PhD, MPH, is a public health specialist at a large multinational healthcare company, where she works on global mental health, increasing the quality of evidence in the global health field, and alternative funding models for global health. She has written extensively about global health, HIV/AIDS policy, and women's health, among other topics, for a variety of health and medical journals, including PLoS Medicine, the International Journal of Women's Health, and AIDS Care. She has worked in the policy division at the HIV Law Project and as a researcher at the Epidemiology Department at Harvard School of Public Health. She has also analyzed mental health policy under the ACA for the Vera Institute of Justice and researched the effectiveness of semi-mobile HIV clinics in rural Kenya for HealthRight International.

Jack M. Gorman, MD, is CEO and Chief Scientific Officer of Franklin Behavioral Health Consultants. Dr. Gorman was on the faculty of Columbia University's Department of Psychiatry for 25 years, eventually serving as Lieber Professor of Psychiatry. He then became the Esther and Joseph Klingenstein Professor and Chair of Psychiatry and Professor of Neuroscience at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine.

A must read for science communicators

This is a must read for everyone troubled by our current "post truth" culture/politics. It explains why so many people deny facts, and provides suggestions for countering this problem in our daily interactions with and efforts to communicate truths to so many people. As a scientist by training and trying to communicate to non-scientists the seriousness and urgency of dealing with global warming, it used to be unfathomable to me how so many otherwise intelligent and rational people would reject dismiss the overwhelming mountains of facts, and fall for the unscientific, irrational and illogical con-man arguments put forth by the climate-change "denialosphere". While many esoteric individual peer-reviewed publications deal with the psychological, social and cultural aspects of this, "Denying to the Grave" pulls it all together in a very readable volume. I felt it is so useful, that I purchased 8 copies to distribute among my colleagues.

An Important Book

This book should be read, digested and implemented by those involved in battling against science denialism. The damage done by the anti-vaxxers and other denialists needs to be rectified. This book lucidly explains the psychological mechanisms that need to be dealt with, and suggests means for doing so. Scientists dealing with the public, health care professionals, journalists and others on the front line need this book. For me, one of the main factors to be remembered is that the denialists aren't stupid (although I still fight against this assumption). Or, if they are stupid, it is unproductive to point this out. To permit science denialism to continue unchecked is literally costing lives. Particularly thought provoking is their suggestion to apply the scientific method in order to determine the best method(s) for getting through to the denialists.

"Substitute 'politics' for 'science' and see what you get"

Although this excellent book is about the tendency of humans to prefer emotional certainty and simplicity to scientific uncertainty and complexity, I found myself substituting the word "politics" for the words "science" and "health" in the text with great profit. Much of what the authors have to say about science and statistics applies to the conspiracy theories ("rigged elections" and millions of illegal voters), charismatic leaders who "speak our language" and appeal to our fears of invasion and attack, that fill the headlines today. Although the authors offer ways to counteract these theories and demagogic leaders, their emotional hold on otherwise rational people will be difficult to change. Although "fact-checking" and open debate appeal to the scientific mind, rhetoric and powerful emotions will too often trump these methods. Hang on to your chi-square charts: it's going to be a rough ride!

Romantic poet Anna Seward, mourning the loss of Honora Sneyd to an unworthy marriage and then death, wrote her beloved’s face and body into her landscape poems. And in 1790s Connecticut, feminist intellectual Sarah Pierce transformed texts and images into a new poetic evocation of intimacy between women both egalitarian and erotic. These women, Moore shows, influenced later works by Emily Dickinson, Georgia O’Keeffe, Frida Kahlo, and Tee Corinne.
Moore goes on to trace the legacy of the lesbian sister arts tradition in subsequent art and poetry, including contemporary multimedia work by Kara Walker, Michelene Thomas, Alma Lopez, and Allyson Mitchell. Her book redefines this unstudied sister arts tradition, which becomes visible only when we understand how the works of these women exemplify what she deems “lesbian genres.” It will captivate readers who want to know more about women’s contributions to garden history and landscape design—as well as those looking for a new perspective on queer history, literature, and culture.

In a series of cutting-edge articles by authoritative scholars, these volumes communicate the results of recent research, and demonstrate the diversity of approaches towards the past in studies of the ancient world.

This two-volume companion includes five sections. The first presents broad, diachronic treatments of important issues in the writing of history in antiquity. In the second section, the major genres and sub-genres of classical historiography are covered in individual articles. The third section presents readings of individual historians and works, while the fourth section looks at those genres – biography, epic and fiction – on the borders of historiography. The final part explores the transition into late Antiquity.
