About the Author
Dr. Rajas Deshpande completed post-doctoral fellowships in Neurology in 2005 and is now the Director of Neurology at the Ruby Hall Clinic, Pune, India. He is associated with many social causes including free medical education, and has been crusading to improve the doctor-patient relationship and communication.

a brilliant doctor and an established neurologist

Dr. Rajas Deshpande has written extensively on facebook and otherwise. A book written by him about patients, medical teachers and doctors, and their complicated relationship has just been published by Partridge. ''The Doctor Gene –What everyone must know about doctors' is a collection of short essays, musings, memoirs amongst others. As all who know about him are aware, Dr. Rajas has been fighting for the causes of doctors and the book tells us just how passionately.
I have seen Rajas evolve as a meritorious scholar, a bumbling medical student, a brilliant doctor and an established neurologist. It is wonderful to think that the lanky kid would grow into a leader of MARD, at the forefront of agitation seeking better conditions for resident doctors. His passion for everything that he holds dear and his felicity with language combine to impart a unique flavor to his writing. In his hands, apparently simple but neglected topics become lofty themes.
The book talks of many things but is mostly about the medical profession and the resistance that some good doctors have to face to change things for the better. Medical practice is not only about the patient’s illness and its treatment. Expectations of patients and relatives from the doctors have increased as hopes for survival have been converted into demands for recovery in shortest possible time. Every patient or some relative knows other doctor than the one treating the patient. This leads to unwanted frustration. These and other problems faced by doctors, whose solutions are perpetually ignored, taking for granted what has been passed on for generations are dealt with at length by the author. The government’s acts and omissions, role of the judiciary and the media in medico-legal cases, ethics in medical professions etc. are some of the themes addressed.
The book is peppered with good stories. 'The Redeemed Devil', 'The Beauty and the Horror' stand out. I hope Rajas considers writing fiction too. As comments on his facebook page show, many are fans of his writing style, and the use of similes (“like a stern mother slapping the bum of her naughty child” deserves special mention in approval) point to a fertile mind.
Dr. Rajas Deshpande makes emphatic assertions, draws up convincing arguments and examples, and asks a lot of uncomfortable questions to himself, as we all should to ourselves. For as humans we owe it to our future generations. I wish this book its due reach: in my opinion everyone concerned with the health industry, especially the medical students who are our future doctors, and people in the media should read it.
