Spiritual Biography

I read - and re-read - this book many years ago and found it one of the most entertaining and enlightening books I had ever read. If you are a questioning spiritual seeker - somehow not quite fulfilled by any organized, formal religion - this is the book for you - and even if you are satisfied with your religion, it will help you re-examine your beliefs. The writer's philosophy is that organized religion is great - as far as it goes - but that, ideally, it is a "school" from which one eventually graduates; that we evolve and become spiritually mature, beyond accepting any one set of dogmatic beliefs; that we come to see and appreciate the truth in all religions, while not adhering to any one particular set of beliefs. A great, heart-warming read, written from the writer's soul, and a wonderful assist to all spiritual seekers.

An inner-directed man gives up on the outer-directed church

George Fowler tells a story that almost every intuitive-feeling or intuitive-thinking Christian or ex-Christian could relate to. The public-institutional church will at its best neglect their needs and, at its worst, drive them out. Probably the same is true of other religions. The overwhelming majority of the population is outer-directed and uninterested in (or threatened by) the perennial mystical tradition that led to their religion's founding and is usually enshrined in their scriptures. Christians who desperately go from one retreat center, workshop, or teacher to another in search of sustenance their church will not provide will relate to George's story. Seekers on the New Age circuit will also relate to the dance of this "fallen monk." Unfortunately, the personalities that thrive on the public face of institutional religion will probably be offended by his critique of their little world, learn nothing, and go on to the next committee meeting or potluck dinner. (And that assumes they would read the book at all, which they probably wouldn't.) My one criticism is that George is a bit too harsh and far-sweeping in his judgment of Protestantism. He simply may not have a very wide experience with the myriad of denominations and movements, and the varieties of inner-directedness some have to offer.

A little soft shoe, perhaps...

I love George Fowler's book 'Dance of a Fallen Monk'. His subtitle, 'A Journey to Spiritual Enlightenment', is very apt for in this book he traces the journey his life has taken from 'down on the farm' outcast to monk to priest to marriage.

Fowler begins by describing his somewhat desolate and directionless adolescence, brought to a climax by friendship with Datus, a stranger in town who took an intellectual interest in Fowler (and gave him the sort of attention he craved). This friend died rather suddenly, and through a combination of intellectual and spiritual accidents and decisions, ended up after a stint in the military with interesting experiences, in a rather strict Roman Catholic monastery.

The period of growth juxtaposed with stagnation during these years is interesting to read. Sometimes it seemed nothing was happening, when it fact it was, and sometimes the 'action' wasn't what it was thought to be.

Fowler's trek away from the monastery, and later away from the Roman Catholic church (finally finding a home in another denomination) is an interesting one. It is full of wonder and awe, heartbreak and reconciliation. I was so glad to have the chance to see a glimpse into some of the pitfalls of ministry; I was thankful that I might have a guide for when I fall into error.

Perhaps the greatest message from this book for me, is that no vocation need be the final word; that all may build upon each other; that a change in direction can be natural and rewarding even if it breaks with a life direction; and, most importantly, one never knows where God will call one to be, and responsiveness requires being willing to break with our most sacred idolised beliefs.

Fowler is writing from the standpoint of a minister who has had almost the full array of possible postings and experiences. No matter how hard or fast or far he ran, the calling to the next stage would always find him, usually when he was unsuspecting, and intending on a different direction. Life is very much like that.

'For my last few years in the cloister, I felt so guilty about early intuitions of this awareness of the mystics, which tradition calls higher consciousness, that I often found myself rushing off to confession to ask pardon for 'sins against the faith'. I would later see that those early 'unorthodox' insights, intuitions, intimations--I would almost call them suspicions at that stage--were actually first breakthroughs into higher consciousness.'

An Excellent Guide For the New Astronomer

This book is packed with enough enformation to keep the reader busy for months.
This book flows with an easy to read style that both novice and experienced stargazers will appreciate.
This book is laid out in a great format that takes into account the various months of the year.
This book blends a good mix of practical observing information and descriptions of various astronomical objects.
This book offers sound advice on the selection of a pair of binoculars.
This book's compact size, coupled with a pair of binoculars offers a great traveling astronomy kit.
This book has easy to read sketches and maps. Many of the pictures mirror the views seen through binoculars.
All in all it is a well put together field guide to astronomy with binoculars.
This book is equally usable to readers in the northern and southern hemispheres.

CONS:

I wish just a little more space was given to the moon. An entire chapter could have been dedicated to the moon. Every few hours the moon looks different through binoculars. A number of the features can be identified.
I wish a few more of the sketches and pictures were similar to actual views through binoculars. Pretty pictures taken by large telescopes can lead readers to expect more than binoculars deliver.
I've spent a lot of time doing astronomy through binoculars. I think this book is overly optimistic at times with what can be seen observed. The book is not wrong, but some of the objects need large binoculars and dark skies.

Fantastic book for starter

I picked up this book and couldn't put it down. I agree with my other reviewer (just two reviewers as of today). This book is packed with lots of contents all the things you need to navigate the horizon. I did exaggerate that a little bit. For novice star gazer, this book takes you through from getting to know a the constellation you can easily observed each month in a year. This is probably one of the few book I picked up that described the sky from both northern and southern hemisphear. There are plenty of detail for what I expect to be a getting to know the sky book. For the price on Amazon, $8, I would give it 6 stars if I can. Throughout the book, you will get to know the stars, constellations, galaxies, nebulars, and how to spot them. Although some objects are quite small with naked eyes, with the help of a binocular, there are quite a lot of stars you can see from a clear sky in the suburbs.

Dr Parker does a great job of dispelling the myths surrounding alkaline water. This is a very easy read and will explain what alkaline water can do, is and isn't. The fact that anybody can own an appliance that can infuse molecular hydrogen into water isn't well understood in our culture. But, in time, this will become accepted and every kitchen will have one, just like microwaves, refers, dishwashers, and stoves.

This is undoubtedly the best book I have read on creativity.

This is undoubtedly the best book I have read on creativity.
This is because the book is based on a solid study as opposed to suppositions.

It provides interesting insights onto the work habits of some major architects and their personalities which are rarely covered elsewhere.
One of the most interesting results was that when architects were asked to name their major influences, the person mentioned in most books about them was not in the list. It also explains how innovation is not a group activity because groups actually stifle the creativity of individuals.

The origins of personality tests in Nazi Germany is an interesting insight.

The last chapter about creativity and its traits is a fascinating read.

There is a lot of really useful information in the book. It took me one week to read, and then another week to reread two of the most interesting chapters.

There is a video on YouTube where Jon Cleese discusses creativity and mentions this book.

Given that my architect father was one of the people studied, and that I myself had written something about the study, I read this book with great care. I think Mr. Serraino has done a masterful job. Interestingly, having an architect and historian summarize the research has yielded a much more vivid and thought provoking delivery than the original, somewhat dry, research papers produced by the study's authors! Also, sixty years on, Serraino has been able to publish comments that give insight into what these architects thought about each other, and details of their development that are much more compelling than the generalizations that necessarily had to be published at the time. If you are interested in creativity but not psychology or architecture you will enjoy this. If you are interested in modern architecture but not the other two, you will enjoy this, if your are interested in valiant efforts by psychologists to study a slippery subject you will enjoy this. I heartily recommend it.

This book is the story about a man whose life and ministry was uniquely guided by the Holy Spirit. It is the story of a humble man who learned the secret of cultivating a rich, inside life with God through prayer, and whose life bore abundant fruit as a consequence.
Although this type of life has to be experienced in order to be understood, Rees Howells does offer some compelling insight on how the Holy Ghost dealt with the very inner reaches of his heart in order to teach him obedience. Mr. Howells is very candid about how, and in what ways his flesh fought the leading of the spirit; how he had to do as the apostle Paul admonishied and "cast down reasonings and bring every thought to the obedience of Christ.
This is a wonderful book that can be enormously edifying, whether you are reading it as I did, as part of your own personal devotional time with God, or in a group Bible study.
Put simply, if you want to read a book about being a true disciple of Jesus, about what it means to count the cost, take up your cross and follow Him, Rees Howells: Intercessor is the book for you. But a word of caution: the type of life set forth in this book is not the run-of-the-mill, intellectual Christianity that so predominates our popular culture in the 21st Century. This book is a call to a rugged faith, a call to "earnestly contend for the faith that was once delivered to the saints."

Not for the faint of heart

The first time I attempted to read this book, I could not read more than a chapter or two without having to put it down. Of all the books I have ever read, except for the Bible, no book has challenged me more than has REES HOWELLS INTERCESSOR. Setting aside my personal theological differences I cannot but be challenged by the dedication of this prayer warrior. His life, his struggles, his apparent failures, and his triumphs, all call me out of my comfort zone to a life of greater commitment to the God I serve. The conviction of that challenge was what kept interrupting my reading. Only when I was ready to subject myself to the same death to self-will Rees Howells endured was I able to go back and read some more. A chapter or two at a time I walked through the life of Rees Howells. More than a reading, this book is an experience.

This book changed my relationship with the Lord more than any single book (outside of the Bible). It is a must read for anyone, not just those gifted in intercession. The author systematically reveals how God works with Rees Howells to purify his heart and become a true doulos/servant (sold-out bond slave). I will read this book again and again until the return. Book Left More to be Desired

I must admit, my expectations for this book were high, after reading some of the reviews and hearing, first-hand, from a co-worker, how inspiring and encouraging it was.

Let's just say, after reading it, I was a bit let down, and the hype surrounding the book, was, in my opinion, unfounded.

The book is a quick read, which is good. The format is conducive to hopping around and really narrowing in on the applications or topics of interest for the reader, which I thoroughly enjoyed. My biggest problem with the book was that the author spent more time trying to convince readers that "real jobs" are passe rather than telling us how we can succeed best with "non-traditional" work.

I felt that the chapters that bullet-pointed opportunities for succeeding without a 9-5 job could have been fleshed out more, to show where the opportunities lie and how to engage in those activities. Simply saying, "write and e-Book," don't really cut it.

I also thought that the author could have delved more into the ways he makes a living. Yes, I understand he has multiple books, but what about investments? What type of online business is he in, specifically? etc.

All-in-all, the book wasn't a bad read and can certainly give pointers/ideas on redefining your career and revenue streams, but if you're looking for a guide to getting you out from under your current 9-5, look elsewhere.

Blew me away...

This book is BLOWING ME AWAY! Get out of the corporate world NOW!

Chapter 1. "Life without a real job will set you free."
I underlined a sentence, "Working at something just for the money is something fearful people do. It is a sign of their lack of self-confidence in their ability, talent, and creativity to earn money doing something they enjoy." Wow. But what if you make a LOT of money. A few paragraphs down, "There can be no doubt that getting trapped in to believing that money is the most important thing in a job increases your chances of being trapped in a miserable job for the rest of your life." Double wow. In our overly materialistic society, we think that money will solve everything, even a dis-satisfying career. I got an idea, I hate my job, let's just get promoted, make more money, and it will take care of the fact that I hate my job. Brilliant. NOT!

Chapter 2. Unreal jobs -- so many worlds; what to do.

The first part of this chapter stopped me in my tracks (at least my eyes in their tracks). Business Week surveyed successful American business executives about their job. 72% where not in their dream job. They named things like they wanted to be a chef, golf pro, rock star, bed-and-breakfast-inn owner/operator. Here's what stops me in my tracks. These guys have the RESOURCES TO DO THEIR DREAM JOBS, BUT MORE MONEY WON'T SEEM TO LEAD THEM DOWN THEIR DREAM PATH. What is holding these guys back? They didn't "choose wisely", to quote the Matrix. And they are paying for it.

I like his list "100 of the coolest unreal jobs." I put tic marks next to many of them as something I would like to pursue.

Chapter 7, "The work model for people to prosperous to do mornings" was the one I went straight to when I first got the book. This chapter talks about making money on the internet. I found it very informative, and Ernie gives lots of examples of people who have made good money on the i-net.

Overall, this book gives you a boost in changing your thinking about the corporate world. Your thinking will never be the same again.
