Groupwork that works!

This book is a great tool for teachers at any grade level. Designing Groupwork gets at the heart of the challenges facing teachers who use groupwork in the classroom. If you are looking for groupwork strategies, perspective on group dynamics, and creative team building examples, this is the book for you! I have used this book in my own teaching practice and have noticed huge improvement in groupwork experiences. In addition, I have gained an awareness of the groupwork process and am able to better serve the needs of my students. Every teacher should own a copy of this book!

Defines True Groupwork

Cohen writes a very informative book on defining and implementing true groupwork, as opposed to the types of group-work which teacher often use in the classroom. The basis behind her strategies are explained, and there are examples both in-text and in the appendix. The groupwork theories described in this book can be used for young children up through college students or adults. This book is simple to read and clearly explained, while at the same time being very helpful and informative.

One of the first books you need to read to understand Iraq

Iraq Since 1958 is considered one of the "standards" of Iraqi history books. There are only a few others that have attained this level, books by Tripp and Marr are also in this category. This book, as well as the others just mentioned are the best places to start. They provide the broad framework and context of modern Iraqi history that is essential for understanding more specific issues, such as sectarianian splits within the country, as well as regional problems with countries like Turkey and Iran.

The book intensely covers the years 1958-1979 along with a chapter on the British monarchy and also a short chapter devoted to both the war with Iran and the ivasion of Kuwait. 1958 stands as one of the most crucial years of Iraq with the overthrow of the British monarchy. An in-depth study beginning with this year and moving forward to the crucial decade of the 60s is the best way to understand how the Ba'th party and Saddam were able to take control of the country.

One of the most striking features of the book is the fact that the authors are very bold in their denunciation of the Ba'th party and its methods. Although one would be hard pressed to find someone actively arguing to the contrary, a high degree of ideological boldness permeates the chapters dealing with Ba'th party rule. Around Sam her verbal diarrhoea seems ten times worse, the snort that she tries to hold in when she laughs refuses to be suppressed, and her clumsiness assumes clown-like proportions.

If only he weren’t quite so intimidating, she might be able to act like a normal human being, but his sheer masculine beauty is enough to throw her off before she’s even spoken to him. Then there’s the fact that he looks at her like she’s something he’s scraped off his shoe. The combination is enough to short-circuit her brain.

Katie may be bubbly and bright but unfortunately her past is not, and it’s started leaking into her present. She hides her fear from her friends as they have problems of their own, but when Sam finds out the potential danger she’s in, for some reason he is furious.

Then again, there’s a reason Sam is the way he is. He has his own demons to contend with. Shutting himself off and burying his pain has been working well for him over the last six years since leaving the Special Forces, so the last thing he wants is to spend any time with the one woman that cuts through the numbness he surrounds himself with and actually makes him feel again. But he simply can’t stand by if Katie is in danger; he can’t allow her to be hurt. Unfortunately there are other ways to be hurt, and by getting closer to Katie, Sam may inflict more damage than her past ever could.

Because Sam is damaged, and some things are beyond repair.

About the Author
Susie Tate is a General Practitioner and when she's not working she's looking after her four yummy boys under five (okay, well one is actually over thirty-five but it's the mental age that counts!). Before becoming a GP she worked her way through a fair few hospital specialties including A&E, General Medicine, Elderly care, Cardiology, General and Orthopaedic Surgery and Psychiatry. Maybe it's a bit unusual for a doctor to be writing romantic comedy/contemporary romance. But she's worked with and treated some real characters in her time and been involved with some pretty bizarre and often hilarious situations, and she wanted to use her experience to write what she hopes are funny, occasionally heartbreaking stories with a real insight into what goes on in hospital medicine.

Two and a Half Stars

This is the third book from Susie Tate and unlike her previous books it is disappointing. Her first book “Broken Heart Syndrome” was excellent (especially as a debut novel). Her second book “Sticks and Stones” proved that her debut novel was not just a fluke. So I was very disappointed that her third effort fell flat. In my opinion the book was not worth 3 stars but I didn’t want to give it 2 stars, or less, because I liked the characters. The storyline is not original having been done before (a lot) in the romance genre but Ms. Tate tried to make it unique in the way that her first two books were. However, it didn’t work. The main characters are well fleshed out, the supporting characters are delightful but there is just something about the story that was “blah”. The book had numerous grammatical and syntax errors and was too long. A good editor would have fixed the errors and shortened the book thus making the story tighter and the pace faster and more dramatic (considering the main storyline). There were also quite a number of inconsistencies within the book, and also in the supporting characters stories in this book compared to the previous books. But the book was not a complete disaster. It was a somewhat enjoyable light read. It is one of those books read once, never read again and gradually forgotten. But I will continue to read Ms. Tate’s books solely on the strength of her previous books which were original, entertaining and felt surprisingly real.
Her next book is about Goodie and I am actually looking forward to it. Goodie was one of the only good things in this book. I hope Ms. Tate’s next book is as good as, if not better than, “Broken Heart Syndrome” and “Sticks and Stones”.

Another favorite!

After reading 'Broken Heart syndrome' I started looking for other Susie Tate books. And yes: Beyond Repair was just out.

A new favorite for sure, this book tells the story of bubbly Katie, small in stature but very warm and likeable. For the last 6 years she has been attracted to Sam, but he has made it very clear he has nothing but dislike for her. The secondary characters are from the earlier Susie Tate books 'Broken Heart Syndrome' and 'Sticks and Stones'. Katie has a stalker and once Sam discovers this everything changes between them. But Sam has a past and is broken. Do Katie and Sam have a future together?

There is no smut in this book but I loved the interactions between Katie and Sam and how protective this broken man was towards her. And he was totally right when he was angry and told Katie she had no regards to her own safety. That was the only gripe I had with this book - that Katie was a bit too trusting sometimes.

Lots of humor and funny moments and a great epilogue. Loved it!

My Thoughts - Story
Hmmm…my thoughts?

Well, there are a limited number of overseas books that I really enjoy and this was definitely one of them. I thought the language barrier made this book and I found it adorable. Just as I found Katie. She was so freaking cute and made this book a winner. I loved trying to figure out what the Welsh slang meant and how everything was solved with a cup of tea!

A book like this was fast paced and the author did a great job with the characters – especially her development of Sam. From the grumpy, pompous ass that he was in the beginning to the over protective, pompous ass he was toward the end – there were so many times I wanted to smack him upside his head.

Enjoyable story from beginning to end with tons of flip flopping from Sam’s part to our comedic poster gay guy…Russell!

There was only one thing that I had a little problem with and that was the sudden switch of Sam – I think I would have liked that drawn out a bit more – especially with more of the snippy banter between Katie and Sam.

Katie has always had a crush on Sam (her best friend’s husband’s best friend) but he won’t give her the time of day and even lowers himself to complain constantly about her to his friend. Until something happens to Katie that suddenly has Sam showing an over-protective streak. Between Katie’s ex-boyfriend (drug/sex dealer) stalking her to the point of it being illegal and Sam trying to get past what happened in his past – Katie seems to be the only one who can bring an ounce of happiness and sunshine to everyone.

As Katie helps Sam learn to live again, their relationship grows and secrets are shared, but are they both strong enough to make it?

It is like twilight that is made for mature women bursting with flavour.

This book is creative, funny, perfect in every sense. It fills your head with emotion, engulfing your sense of touch and smell.
It is perfect for those laid back days where you just lie down on your bed with a glass of red wine, with a little jazz music playing in the background. I highly recommend this book or maybe its bundle set.

Viola Spolin's Theater Games for the Lone Actor offers theater games and side coaching for the solo player. Available for the first time, this handbook presents more than forty exercises that allow actors to side coach themselves at home, in rehearsal, or in performance. Building on her seminal Improvisation for the Theater, Spolin challenges the actor to develop an ability to enter present time, "a moment of full consciousness, awareness, continuous time, a timeless moment . . . with all of your responses awake and alert, ready to guide you . . . allowing you, the real you, your natural self, to emerge."
Spolin's improvisational techniques changed the nature and practice of modern theater. Her work has inspired actors, directors, teachers, and writers in theater, television, and film. Her techniques have also influenced the fields of education, mental health, social work, and psychology.

About the Author
Viola Spolin, the originator of theater games, was introduced to the use of games, storytelling, folk dance, and dramatics as tools for stimulating creative expression in the 1920s while a student of Neva Boyd at Chicago's Hull House. During her years as a teacher and supervisor of creative dramatics there, she began to develop her nonverbal, nonpsychological approach. Her books have been translated into Swedish, German, and Portuguese. She died in 1994.

Paul Sills is Viola Spolin's son and the founding director of Chicago's Second City and of Story Theater. He is the coeditor of the third edition of Spolin's Improvisation for the Theater, also published by Northwestern University Press.

Good Is Better Than Good Enough

"Theater Games for the Lone Actor" is not a beginner's book. It is structured to take advantage of the lingering effects actors enjoy after participating in the games played in Spolin's "Improvisation for the Theater." For instance, the mindset needed for side-coaching the self, essential to succeeding at the activities in this book, does not come without exposure from an outside source.
However, for those who have learned the thought processes that come of Spolin-style improvisation, "Theater Games for the Lone Actor" has multiple applications. When working in a solo position, such as a one-man show, a screen test, or an audition, using these activities in preparation can make the difference between doing well and doing exquisitely. These activities also are useful for memorization and other scene work within a directed play, and for compensating for a lackluster director or weak co-star.
Many of these activities are adapted from "Improvisation for the Theater." Some activities that were originally presented for group work, such as Space Walk and Feeling Self With Self, recur between the covers of this slim pamphlet. The difference lies in doing them individually, refreshing the benefit of prior group work, and also in coaching yourself, becoming aware in a more objective manner of what you're doing as an actor and how you're doing it.
Repetition of the concept of "present time" reinforces the almost Buddhist nature of theatrical improvisation, requiring participants to be entirely in the moment. This is good advice for all forms of actors, since, if you're in another time and place, you're not giving the character you play the commitment it deserves. Through long-term exposure to the activities in this book, and effort consummate to commitment, an actor can develop the ability to be in the moment on command, or even on a permanent basis.
This book is tiny, small enough to slip unobtrusively in a shirt pocket and have on hand to do solo warm-ups or skills exercises. This helps allow the actor to develop while waiting for an audition, while riding on a bus, while lying in bed at night, or in any situation where time and solitude permit even a moment's concentration.
Highly recommended for all working and aspiring actors, "Theater Games for the Lone Actor" is the kind of book that can make all the difference between doing a good job and doing a merely good enough job.

Every actor's companion

I am a former student of Viola Spolin. I was around when Viola was working on this book. She knew her work was needed in group situations, but she also knew the needs of actors who have to work "in one". Either in front of a camera or an audtion situation. She knew the problems of fear, urgency and over thinking were the actor's nemesis.
These games and suggestions help an actor become 'present' to his/her own work and therefore fully involved in the reading, audtion or solo performance.
Not only that, it is a great method to enrich your everyday life. The same games and suggestions are great ways to bring yourself more fully to your relations with others.
The Sills, Paul and Carol have done a great job of editing this book. It's really easy to read.
I especially like the poems included in the book. "Crystal Ball" is my favorite of Spolin's poems celebrating the mystery of present time.
Her whole theory of play and present time is a great way to live life.
